All that bitching aside, I'd take a good look at a new (not used) Mitsubishi Mirage. It's got a CVT, and is likely to have similar problems to the Nissan in the reliability department, but a 10 year powertrain warranty (if you're the original owner) is a nice counterbalance to that.
That is literally one of the worst (if not THE worst) cars made today. I'd rather ride my bike. I've been in one (rental) and it is gutless, loud, uncomfortable, etc.

In SoCal you should be able to find your choice of a Focus, Elantra, Sentra, etc for under $14k. Those are worlds better cars for about the same money. A Mirage might be worth $9k...and even then just because someone has to have a new car.

my maternal Grandmother likes full size buicks
My paternal Grandparents are in their 90s and still drive around in their Toytoa Yaris. (tall ceiling, easyish to get in and get out... they are small framed people and dont need big crossover)

Supposedly the crown vic/grand marquis/lincoln town car are good for shorter older people. They're not that great on gas and they're big cars though. Nice, cheap and pretty easy to find V8 rwd cruisers though.
Big cars not going to work in the Bay Area with all those tight parking spaces and her parking skills.

I don't trust the reliability of Mitsubishi, when it has problem I'll be the one to deal with it. Even with warranty it is still very inconvenient. I had enough with the Versa already. A new Mirage may be cheap but the depreciation is really bad. Another reason I don't want a new car is that sooner or later she'll scratch the bumper/fender on that pole next to her parking spot. It is pretty much a proven fact. That's also the reason I prefer a subcompact for her as she can manage it better on tight parking space.

I also want to stress the importance of having a dashcam. The other party is denying liability and accusing her for fault of getting into his lane. Thankfully I have the dashcam footage to prove otherwise. Most people are not going be honest when involved in an accident.

Oh, they're being honest....they just happened to be driving in your mom/granny's lane, so from their perspective: driving in my lane!
