Recommendations for a Chicago winter coat?

I've been told knee length, down, and wind-stopping since winter temps can go well below freezing, but it's hard to find many, especially ones that aren't effing expensive.

I live in Edmonton, Canada and I wear a jacket I found at a used clothing store for $30

Topcoats. Banana Republic had a huge sale on all winter-wear last week. If you scour the clearance sections, they could probably be had to about $120. Got mine for $200 a few weeks back.

They'll last until they wear out, so it's a good "investment". Won't ever go out of fashion, it's stylish and casual at the same time, works everywhere.

I wear a leather jacket when it's cold. Otherwise, I wear just a fleece jacket.
If it gets really cold (like -30 or -40), I will wear them both... Haven't hit a really cold day this year. It's been damn mild all winter to tell the truth.

I live about 40 miles NW of chicago in Wauconda.

Also, While I may say that it's not been cold, or that a fleece is plenty for all the weather we've had so far this year. I will say this... Remember to keep your ears, hands, and feet warm!!!!!

A cheap jacket with good boots, wool socks, a hood or a hat, and decent gloves is better than a "nice" jacket with gym shoes and thin socks and no gloves or hat...

Craft a coat from the skin of dead homeless guys. They keep a large store of them in the streets during the winter for that purpose.

Where ya moving to? I just moved to the city not too long ago. Honestly I just wear a cheap puffy coat and freeze my ass off walking from point to point.

I'll be in the Logan Square area. How long ago'd you move? Have you had a proper chicago winter yet? The first time i visited was in february, so I want to be PREPARED this time!

I've lived in the burbs and its just as cold. I guess the only difference is that now I walk a bit more than I would in the burbs. It will indeed suck in february however I was able to walk to my gym tonight in just a long sleeve shirt, hat, gloves, and shorts and was fine.

I remember those from when I was a kid. That sucker kept you warm no matter how cold it was. When I discovered the whistle it became the best coat I ever had.

Looks like it made a comeback? Fugly though.

Pretty much anything will work as long as it's rated to about -40.

Cashmere wool topcoat, knee to ankle length. You can be in the middle of a blizzard and be burning up and breaking a sweat.

You want something like a German or Russian style Great Coat .. and stay away from Lake Michigan during winter. It will get brutal around it.
