I'm looking for recommendations for a new monitor.
24" in size (can't fit anything bigger on this desk). 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 resolution is fine either way. IPS or VA preferably. It's main use is gaming, but also surfing the web, watching videos. Price around $300ish, if something was really good enough I'd spend some more.

I'm coming from a Dell U2412m and was not a big fan. My biggest issue is that the picture just wasn't that good, even when calibrated. Turns out the listed static contrast ratio of 1000:1 wasn't exactly accurate. The best I saw out of mine was about 600 ish:1 when I finally had something to take a proper reading. Based on reviews from places like TFT Central that seems off, but I think quality control from LG/Dell may not be the greatest. I've had other issues with their monitors like bad back light bleed, lots of dead/stuck pixels and one ASUS Monitor I tried a few years back that had contrast tied to brightness so that you'd lose massive amounts of contrast when lowering brightness.
Normally I'd just look at professional reviews, but given that the information I received about the last one was different then what I received it seems like you are playing a bit of a monitor lottery and the best monitors go to the reviewers maybe?
I'll also add the replacement model for the Dell I had also seems to have issues for some people like ghosting and significant back light bleed from what I've read so far, so definitely wanting to avoid that hassle. To say nothing of what the actual contrast ratio for it is.
