Recommendations for a new mountain bike?

Looking to pick up a new mountain bike in the next few weeks. Im a college student and will mainly be riding my bike around campus but out on the trails on the weekends. Im a noob and have just started researching my options. Does anyone have any recommendations around the $300-$500 range? Thanks for your help!

Ok so which Specialized would fit me best in that price range? Also, Ive checked thier website, how much can you expect to find off of the listed retail prices?

The Specialized Hardrocks would be in your price range. My wife and I just got a pair of the Sport version....good bikes, IMHO.

you can get some pretty good entry level bikes with that much money. my friend got lucky and he picked up a giant rincon earlier this week ofr only $260!!! furthermore, he was looking at some treks, specifically the 4100 and 4300, both were $280-$300. some awesome prices.
