Recommendations for a traveling backpack?

I went to Europe for almost a month w/a North Face Terra 40. I would suggest you get something larger than that since it can be considered a daypack to some people. I just didn't want one of those huge backpacks that are 3/4 the size of my body.

By it in Europe. They are cheaper and often better. Atleast they where before they switched to the Euro. I got a VauDe for cheap and it is great.

I have a Gregory Arcadia, 3800ci, longest trip I've taken with it was about 10days. Works well for me because if it were any bigger I would make it too heavy to pick up or be able to check it on planes.

Go to REI and get fitted with one, considering you may be carrying over 50lbs in the bag, it's important to make sure it's as comfortable as possible.

Do you want internal frame or external frame? Bladder support? What sort of load? Volume/Capacity?

Go to a local outfitter and have an employee fit you to a pack. Your highest priority should be finding one that is comfortable for you, and that isn't likely to happen if you get what someone else recommends. They can measure you and give you 5 or 6 to try out and you can pick the best one for you.

i used this pack for extended trips in europe and also had a nice REI weekend back pack for shorter trips

I've got a Kelty Redwing 2900... I think its been replaced by the 3100 model (the numbers indicate the cubic inches). That size should be large enough to hold your stuff, plus small enough to count as carry-on when you're flying. If the stuff you're taking won't fit in a bag that size, you're taking too much.

Some other members have said, but I'll say it again: Go to a local outdoor store and have them fit you for a pack. That way, you can find out whether you want internal or external fram and how big you want it.
