Recommendations for LCD for photo editing

Hi all,

I was hoping for some opinions about what LCD to buy. It will be used mostly for photo editing in Photoshop. I'd say my ceiling in terms of price is around $300. Also, I have a GeForce 6200 vid card if that makes any difference.

Look for a monitor that uses a IPS panel. Eg, NEC 80, 90 & spectraview series. They are quite expensive though. Dont buy something that uses a TN panel becuase you wont get true 16.7million colours.

The VX2025WM is 8-bit but has higher gamma (not good unless you know how to calibrate it). I think the LG, even though it's 6-bit, will be better for most people. The LG is a much more uniform panel AFAIK.

Any cheaper than that and you're just going to have to grab the best TN. Samsung 940BF or LG L1970HR. The Samsung may have a tighter gamma curve but the LG will have higher contrast so it's a toss-up. You might want to wait for the Samsung 931C, an LCD with 97% gamut, to show up in stores. MSRP $299. The ones listed above offer only 72%.

Edit: The Samsung is supposed to be released sometime in October so it depends if you want to wait that long or not.

If you want to edit photos, buy yourself a decent second-hand CRT monitor. No LCD screen even comes close to a good CRT in terms of colour purity.
