Recommendations for Wireless Router for Online Gaming Use

Hi,

I am looking at buying a wireless router for hooking up my son's new PC to our Cable service by wireless for use with online FPS gaming and such. We'll have two computers on the LAN once connected.

Any advice on a good router for under $100 that will serve us well is appreciated as I know nothing about routers.

if the computer is using the hard line, then pretty much all the routers will offer same performance. if the computer is using a wireless card, then u want to get 802.1g

try searching online for router reviews/top ten lists and such....gamming wont make a router better/worse than another

i am using a dlink DI-614+ and have no problems (im connected on a hard line), but my router is 802.1b only.

I would go with a LinkSys or Netgear SuperG router and matching PCI card.

Thanks for the response, will I need anything special to connect the PC's or to use it as wireless? The one computer that I have right now is hooked directly to the cable. I assumed that I could still hardwire it to the router and use the new PC as wireless, just not sure of any hardware or PCI card that I might need.

The one I intend to hook up wireless is a Mini-Tower that I just built for him, but was unsure of what I needed for the router connections.

wireless networks are based off of 2 technologies... the AD HOC and the infrastructure....

a quick way to explain this is :
adhoc= wireles nics networking the pcs to each other
infrastructre= nics in pcs and an access point connecting them to the network =nics and a router or hub whatever.

if you want to save cash, get 2 wireless g nics and network the pcs that way; if your not going to network over 10 to 16 pcs.
, you did say the router you are currently using is already attached to a pc (hardwired) for internet purposes. the only thing is the pc that has the router hardwired into it will also become another router (your sons pc will use it to access the hardwired router that you use for the internet) ; so it will have to be powered on at all times.

the other way is... spend the cash and get a wireless g router and 2 g nics. then both pcs can be on and off as they please whilke accessing the internet. your going to plug your internet router into the wireless g router, from there it will shoot toward the pc's.

i did it the first way i specified but, my other pc that stays on all the time is also a server, i need that machnie running 24/7.

i'd like to suggest that you should learn about security while you jump into the wireless networking. someone who knows what they're doing or on some instances, pcs auto configure theselves to pick up on the network = your neighbors pc may attach itself to your network for free internet access.

on a side note, make sure to check with peripherals around where your router would be...there are certain things that can cause the signal to go out (microwave, 2.4g phone, etcetera)
