Hi,

Eventhough CDR blank discs are inexpensive now, it is still difficult to pick the model and brand. One reason is because of the many different qualities. What brand and model do most people recommend? I have seen many completely no blank cdr at computer shows, and brand name cdr such as Maxell, TDK, and Sony. I am looking at both the 65min and the 80min. I burn a variety of data, including audio, various data, and video. Thanks.

I've never had a problem with TDK's. Just make sure you get the Certfied Plus rather than the 100% Certified. The latter are cheap one's made by Ritek.

Sony for quality (their Silver CD-R's). For cheap audio burning, go to CompUSA and get a spindle of their cheapie discs, I've never had a problem with them and I've gone through over 40 of their discs.

PLextor use to have a list of certified media.

Kodak, TDK, and maxell where on that list.

But now they sell their own media, so...

I use Imation CD-Rs and the only reason I have had any messed up discs is because of the computer.

I don't know what's the best, but avoid Fujifilm CD-Rs as well as PNY. They don't take well to DOS, and both do not play on CD Players two years and older of age.

Wish I would've asked the board for recommendaiton before I went out. The board is my new mom.

I use cheap-ola CompUSA unbranded blanks for PC game/apps. I'm not sure if it's still going on, but last weekend CompUSA were selling 50 packs of these for $10 minus a $5 rebate = $.10 per CD...not a bad deal. They might still be selling them for $10, but the rebate was only for Thanksgiving weekend.

And for dreamcast backups and audio CDs I use Imation blanks, they're much more reliable and more CD players support them. I used to use TDKs, but Imations work equally as well and are much cheaper...Staples usually has great deals on 100-spindle's of the 74min blanks, usually $19 or $29. And just last week, they had a 50-spindle of 80mins for $19. Outpost.com has great deals on these also.

dreamcast backups??? lol

I just bought a 50pack of Memorex Pros 74min/650MB yesterday for $19. cheap. then today they had a sale of the same thing except in 100 pack for $30, I hate it everytime I get ripped off

I've used blank generics silver/silver and I've never had a bad burn, if I did, it was CPU resources banking.

It's not really a good idea to blanket statement that (for example) FujiFilm discs are all bad. The FujiFilm 80min cdrs are made by Taiyo Yuden! and rock the house. Now, it's probably true that other FujiFilm's are probably made by RITEK, CMC Magnetics or GigaStorage or any other crap cdr manufacturer and deserve a certain rep but for this exception.

Nowadays, many brand names subcontract their cdrs to many oem manufacturers to cover the whole gamut. From the good stuff to the crappy stuff. It's amazing and that's why you should be careful and do your homework on the particular factory that makes the discs you are looking at.

Another example: Maxell cdrs are made by Mitsubish Chemicals (good) but other mainstream Maxells are made by RITEK (bad). Incidently, I had some RITEK Maxells and they are the only ones that have had problems with reading. I now use only Kodak Silvers (Kodak), Mitsui Silvers (Mitsui Advanced Media) and FujiFilm 80min (Taiyo Yuden).

Another example: TDK media. The 100 pk with rebate. There are at least two kinds out there. The usual RITEK made stuff (not so good) and Taiyo Yuden made - two 50 pk spindles screwed together (good to very good).

I use the COMPUSA CD-Rs(50 PK Spindle) for mostly pc and sometimes audio. I haven't had any problems. The only problem I've had is because I forgot to copy a folder, which had nothing to do with the disc.

bill_n_opus,

I have the FujiFilm 80minute CD-Rs. My CD Player won't read them. Sigh...I'm so sad...

I will tell you this much. I got a Sony 2x cd-writer about 3.5 years ago. It cost me $500 at the time. I burned a whole bunch of audio cds on Memorex media. It burned fine but I am finding that most of the cds that I burned back then are no longer readable. I will never buy memorex crap since their life is 5 years or less.

I use TDK "All Speed" and they are great!

Stay away from Memorex, I've never used them myself, but I hear that they are of the poorest quality.

I'm using Memorex's currently because they are very cheap. $9.99 for ten 80min CD-R's with Jewel cases. and that is in Canadian dollars...so figure like $6.50 US. Not a single problem or coaster yet...gone through about 50 I guess. Other brands that have worked well: Verbatim DataLifePlus, anything Sony, and even Maxell's.

Thanks.

With all that said and done, what are some good places to find a variety of blank CDR at a good price? CDR deals from Internet vendors are often on models that suck.
