Recommended compressed music file format?

I would like to re-burn all my CD's (yeah, I still buy CD's) into a new format since my new MP3 player should be coming soon. It is an Archos Gmini 402 (20 GB), which I think can only reproduce MP3 and WMA, and I would like your reccomendations on what program(s) to use and what format to use.

Go MP3. You can use it on the Ipod or any MP3 player.

WMV is Microsoft Crap

I personally see no advantage to WMA over MP3. Any device that plays WMAs will play MP3s, but NOT viceversa.
