Recommended IM Client?

What do people recommend for instant messaging? I am running Windows XP, BTW.

I have tried Gaim (which has problems with my cygwin installation because of a DLL conflict) and the free Trillian client (which does not have all the functionality that I want). I only chat with people through AIM, so a program that supports that is what I'm looking for. Clearly, the official AOL client is out of the window (due to the annoying ads and all the "Try AOL" icons they store on your computer).

What else is out there?

What does the free version of Trillian not do for you. I am running it and loving it. I can talk to all my peeps on both AOL and MSN with out using either app, and it is so light weight.

Trillian is pretty nice. The one thing I miss (and I must admit it's not very crucial) is being able to see a user's away message by hovering over their name in the contact list. This is one thing that Gaim did that I liked.

I guess I'm just a little curious as to what else is out there. Trillian is probably best suited to my needs, to be honest. I just didn't know if I was missing something else.

trillian does allow you to do that, for AIM users, when you hover over their name, it shows their icon, username, service, warnings, online time, away message (if they are away), idle time (if they are idle), and capabilities

i have been testing out the options in preferences->contact list but have been unable to turn it off, so i dont know what to tell you to try, but it has always been on for me. btw, im running the pro version

Yes, it must be a feature of the Pro version. I'm running the free version, and all I get is whether or not they are away.

I think Miranda can do AIM (through plugin). It's the best for ICQ at least. The 'who is reading my status msg' plugin is very cool.

I just switched to Trillian because this post reminded me that I have been meaning to for some time.
