Recommended quiet server/workstation cooling

I'm just about to ship this box I built up as a video transcoding workstation, but before I do, I'm seeing if I can quiet down the default noise level, which is pretty damned loud (it's going to stay in a friend's apartment).

Here's the basic setup:

http://secure.newegg.com/NewVe...WishListNumber=8383448

I replaced the 2.0ghz with 2.33ghz chips, and it's passively cooled right now (no fans on the CPUs). I'd like to ensure that it keeps decent airflow but is a bit quieter -- right now the outtake fan, along with the fan mounted. I put in a videocard as well (just an R700) which doesn't seem to put off much heat, but figured I'd mention it as it's the only addition to the stock stuff I got. The CPU will often be at 80-100% load during long transcoding jobs.

Unfortunately I'm pretty out of touch as to what servers/etc need in terms of cooling nowadays. It will be in NYC but mostly air conditioned during summers.

I was looking at something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835887011 but I'm really not sure if that will work well for the dual processor setup.

Anyway...anyone have any recommendations? Would really appreciate it.

thanks,
Rob

AFAIK the nirvana does not come with mounts for S771. Also, It's more than likely going to be too big considering how close together the sockets are in that system. Given their proximity to the SATA hotswap bays you're going to be even further limited as airflow up front there is not going to be ideal. A top down cooler would really be best in your situation, IMHO. Lemme see what I can find...

EDIT:Something like this would be your best bet

EDIT2:Or like this

Sorry for the dumb questions-- running these fanless, I take it? Am I going to have to remove the motherboard to mount the adapter for the board I have (I know I have in the past for various backplates...really don't want to do that in this case).

Rob

well entity i cant help you out for sure.

I was mearly looking though the nieman marcus of the computer world, ie. FrozenCPU.com they are definitely the most expensive, however they have almost everything at a premium.

But the info on the page says direct bolt on meaning yea, you need to use the backplate the ultima and ultra come with, so board removal is required. Sorry, but you asked for a quiet solution. These are the best, you should of specified without board removal :T

The Ultima90 and the ultra120 is the best sink in its class, and a ultra120 could probably cool the box off passively or near passive as long as you had decient flow inside the case.

I'm 90% sure that in the case of 771 xeons they do not come with a backplate as most if not all 771 motherboards have metal backplates included and in his case, you can see the mounting holes of the backplates sticking through the motherboard so I'm pretty sure they come pre-installed.

you know what your absolutely right...

lol... i think that bottom piece is a bolt then so you would still need to remove the board.

ooh, that gives me naughty ideas for my next workstation at work. I'm not up on xeons but, they do have 3x10 wolfies out right?

Get Harpertown, the 45nm 12MB L2 Cache 1333FSB Quad-core Xeons!!!! (on a dual-socket board!)

I'll have a thread up in either CPUs or GH in the next couple days, my dual 285, 8GB per proc, with dual quattro's is starting to show it's age. They re-compiled the software we run here at work(or something like that, I don't do software) when the original C2D xeons came out but, I had already spent my budget on workstations many months before and my 3 years has got to be coming up soon, whole new workstation for me

That's the extreme.

But while you're at it, why not get this? :*)
http://www.acousticpc.com/ther..._ifx14_cpu_cooler.html

That doesn't look like it'd fit in my current case (in the Asus TS500).

I'm pretty sure teh Ultima 90 is going to be a snug fit with that hard drive cage so yeah, these are out of the question.

Yeah, just got the Ultima 90 and it's not even close to fitting. It's staying semi-cool right now despite the stock heatsinks. I'm looking into retrofitting it a bit to put a 120mm fan blowing down on it though I don't know if that will do more harm than good right now -- I can't get motherboard monitor to actually work with this case/board/etc so I don't know the temps under load. Wheeeee.

coretemp 0.97.1 should tell you core temps.

and what do you mean its not close to fitting? did you get the adapter i linked for it as well? you need that adaptor to pull that sink off on a lga771 board.

you did try and mount it this way | and not -- right? Are they just too close together?

I've been looking everywhere for a solution, I should have started here... Just to get some clarification. I have the Intel S5000XVN with the standard Intel LGA771 Socket CPU (Stock) Cooler. The noise is getting to me big time. What CPU Cooler would you guys recommend i use. Keep in mind that I stay in South Africa and resources are limited. But I will do just about anything to have some "silence"!! Thanks in advance.

Anybody want too pitch in, please!
