Hope this is not a re-post.

Hard to find Sony DRU500A DVD+R/+RW/-R/-RW CD-R/RW reconditioned in plain box $309 plus shipping.

Link here.

I think this is a great deal. Too bad short of $$ now.

Saw this a few days ago. Also its "Factory Reconditioned". You might like to edit your title to reflect this. BTW, only 10 units available.

Is Circuit City (w\ MSN Rewards) still the best bet?

Edit: Guess not since they are out of stock.

You can get it from Gateway for $315.17 after shipping and the $20 off $199 coupon. You can also get 2% back from Ebates making it about $308.

Hiya,

This deal is not hot at all, no offense intended. I went to Best Buy and the pimple-faced salesman laughed at me when I asked if they had this unit in stock. So then out of the remorse of money burning a whole in my pocket, I went to loiter around Circuit City. Looking at their shelves, I said "wait, a minute ... DRU500A ... DRU500A?????? HOLY $#@*!!!!" I paid $349 at Circuit City B&M and because they were feeling especially consolatory, they threw in a free 3 year extended warranty! $349 brand new. In my humble opinion, words that start with "R" = refurbished, reconditioned, rubbish. Tons of my friends have bought refurb "deals" only to have the thing break moments later. Just think, OEM uses high tolerance probably robotic processes, and refurb may have less precise human "fixing" involved. Example, a friend of mine bought a refurb Radeon 9700 Pro and it had flux residue from HAND COLD SOLDERING!!! He could only get 30 fps in Medal of Honor at 800x600 with that botched card. Buying a new card gave him the performace he expected. BEWARE REFURB!, it's an industry scam in my opinion. Good luck though!

Unfortunately "in stock" depends on your zipcode.

I got this new for $250 from Dell. I would wait for some time for the price of this drive to come down.

Is anyone concerned that there are already refurbished drives seeing how these things are maybe a month old? I was thinking about getting one, but now I'm a little worried.

John,

I'm sorry to hear that it is out of stock in your area... But, if you are really in need of this drive, and they do actually have this drive in stock, I would be more than willing to purchase the drive and ship it to you, if you agree to cover the costs..

Send me a PM if you want me to do that...

Insomniac,

i have heard nothing but great things about the drive.. especially with the new firmware upgrade... But, if anything were to happen, Im sure Sony's warranty policy is second to none..

I don't understand how an almost new product line already has "reconditioned" units available. IMHO, this doesn't bode well for the quality of this product.

yeah, it was probably returned not working and they want to give it another try on another poor customer who will have to pay a shipping charge both ways and a restocking fee. I don't think I'll was all the time.

You'd be suprised how many people out there buy something, can't figure out how to use it (or it wasn't what they expected) then return it. It (obviously) can't be sold as new (except at Fry's), so after making sure everything's included (and usually testing it) most retailers mark X% off and sell it on a discount table. Or when a big chain doesn't have time to test the products they just send them back to the manufacuter who then tests them out and sells them to companies like the Geeks as refurbs, although nothing was even wrong with it in the first place.

LOL! 90% of the computer items at Fry's is a returned item being sold as new.. Just look for the little white sticker with a date on it. The date shows when someone returned that particular item.

So, just be careful.. Always try and buy things that are sealed by the MFG. and sometimes even that is a return item
