Your assumption is that enthusiasts run the Q6600 at stock. Your assumption is wrong.

Guru3d has good video card reviews, but this CPU review is a bit weak given the large amount of synthetic benches.

Looking at it from another side, ironically there's no quad-core platform more power efficient that the combo of a Phenom X4 with a 790GX based mainboard. Overall these four logical CPU cores are hardly stressed at all, let alone four of them simultaneously. Our tests showed that the PC in IDLE was only consuming 115 Watts, which was an all-time low.
Maybe if they didn't pair the Q6600 with a high-end enthusiast motherboard. Or like Anandtech, paired a Q9300 with a IGP here:

http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=3432&p=11

The Q9300 plus a Nvidia 9300 based MB is clearly the lowest power quad-core platform.

I really have to disagree with too many of you. Unbelievable!!!!

THIS THREAD clearly, if you read the OP, is NOT ABOUT INTEL AT ALL.

This is about Phenom:
= "I would like to see some performance numbers posted but no one has so far."

= "Phenom now that multiple hardware sites have them running at 3.5 GHz".

= "running at 3.5 GHz on air with the "new" south bridge".

= "with the "new" south bridge"

THIS OP IS ALL ABOUT PHENOM!!!!

ANYTHING INTEL is simply off-topic!!!!

Pardon me; but I really value the ENGLISH language. If you are so illiterate as to believe that this is, IN ANY WAY, about intel crawp - then I have no additional time to waste trying to convince you otherwise.

You can justify FLAMEWAR all you like - flamers need no justification. It's all bs. So thank you very little for trashing a thread that's clearly
(if you speekada eengleeeshh)
all about AMD recent news about PHENOM
and the best test report is RIGHT HERE ON ANANDTECH. (hello?)

- I don't need your illiterate apologies either - but I would like to be able to discuss the AMD PHENOM without disruption. And that is clearly impossible in THIS HIJACKKEDD THREAD - thank you very little mr moderator, SIR (salutes der geshtapoh and walks away in disgust)
Keep this up, and you will have a vacation.

I readily cop to my mistakes - but not this. This is all yours to decipher - hint - it's in code - real esoteric stuff.

I bet you think I have a bad attitude also. You a shrink? Get away from me, cos I did not ask for that. That's all your problem. You think I am supposed to like it?

Read it ALL again for the first time >>> Then have a flame party - at your own expense, not mine.

(leaves knowing the illiterates in the group will find a way to justify continuance of same)
(somebody had the audacity to utter the word "objective") (my opinion of 'objective' is already subjective) (don't think too hard about this)

I feel like I should apologize for somebody elses problem; but the problem is I already dealt with my codependency issues. So it's all yours. You see, I truly DO NOT CARE. Thx for your help "brother".

OMG LOL this guy DETONATED the nuke right next to him lol.... either that or he was having an extreme DAMMIT moment lol...

I plan on checking out a Deneb BE chip when they come up, if they're not too expensive. I picked up a Foxconn 780G mobo and BE-2400 chip in a combo deal for $99. Haven't installed them yet, in place of my 6150 matx and S939 3800+ chip. But for future games, encoding, HD movie decoding, and just general background DC crunching, I want to step up to a quad-core. The thing is, it has to be very power-efficient, because the PSU in my micro-atx is a custom size, and is only 200W. That's why I'm not OCing my current S939 CPU in that box, don't want to burn out my PSU.

Thanks for the link amenx. Looks like not much has changed in the past few months since this thread has been made. The ye-olde Q6600 is IMO still the best all round quad, especially once overclocking is taken into the equation. The 45nm C2Qs are worth looking at for the power savings though.

I doubt any enthusiasts will run the BE 9950 at stock either. Both the Q6600 and the BE9950 (with a SB750) should be good for mid 3GHz range when overclocked.

I'm reconsidering Phenom, but not the current Phenoms.

When Nehalem was first announced, I was biding my time waiting for it. Then I saw Anandtech's initial review about how gaming won't be improved that much. So I started to wait for Nehalem so I could get a Core 2 Quad on the cheap. Today, I read this article:
http://www.nordichardware.com/news,8195.html

The possibility of reaching 4.3 GHz on air cooling and still use less power than Intel gets my interest. If true, the Shanghai or Denabs Phenoms might best Intel in gaming. So now, I've moved AMD back up to the top of my list for a new CPU. I've always thought the AMD motherboards provided much more bang for the dollar and are much easier to get exactly what you want.

I just wish Shanghai, Denab, and Nehalem were already available so we can get a review. My 3 year old computer is just waiting for an upgrade!

Mark my words, Deneb will NOT hit 4.3GHz whilst using less power than Intel 45nm HKMG. Unless AMD has found a way of defying physics, this is simply not possible. Everything is against them - pipeline length, gate thickness/gate leakage, lack of HKMG etc.

This isn't saying 4GHz+ overclocks won't be possible on Deneb, just that it would most likely require a substantial amount of voltage, so the less power than Intel claim is laughable at best, unless they compared it to a 90nm Pentium D...
