What do you know about the model of Peavey amp that you have? The Peavey Bandit, for example, is favored pretty highly for a solid state amp. A couple of pedals in front of that thing and you'd have a decent array of tones. Getting them into your PC is another matter, however.

This little unit makes a good amp simulator for going direct to a recording interface:

http://www.amazon.com/Joyo-JF-14-American-Amplifier-Simulation/dp/B007L0CH8K

But it's bare-bones, no cool effects like overdrive/modulation/delay, etc built in. It's what you run your effects pedals INTO before going direct.
I'd have to go look at it. Been years since i looked at and don't remember the model. Not at home now though. I think it was bought between 2002 and 2005. It had multiple effects built in to it. I think it cost about $250. I think it was black and red.

The local Guitar Center had that amp for $10,000 a few weeks ago. I think it was their way of saying that it was out of stock.

Haha, either that or it was a special edition built with new old stock unobtanium transistors and real unicorn tears in the diodes.

I'm looking at the Focusrite 2i2 right now. It looks like it should work for everything we want to do.

On a related question, any recommendations on removable piezo pickups? My wife wants to record acoustic guitar and banjo but doesn't want any permanent modifications to the instruments. The banjo uses nylon strings which rules out magnetic pickups.

Edit: I'd also like recommendations on removable magnetic pickups as well. The guitars have bronze strings.

focusrite is a good brand.

these boxes are not hard to make, as long as you get one from a known brand, you'll be ok.
can't help you on the piezos, these things change every 2-3 years. ask your local guitar repair shop.

Have you considered just getting a good condenser mic for recording the acoustic instruments?

We have been using a Sony PCM-M10 digital recorder with very good results as far as capturing the instruments goes. The recorder has excellent sensitivity and low self-noise. The issue has been that our neighborhood has gotten louder and finding windows of silence when we can record without road noise, AC units kicking on, and the beeping of construction vehicles has become more difficult. We're looking for ways to be able record w/o worrying as much about background noise.

Ah, I see. Ok.

Information overload

Same info, drop-down menus

A good discussion with various opinions

my amp is Peavey Transtube 258 EFX

Ok the manual is available online. I was particularly interested in what kinds of outputs it had other than the speaker, but it looks like it only had headphones out. You could potentially connect the headphones output to the input of a USB audio interface like those mentioned above, but it's not technically ideal. Depending on your pc's sound card you could possibly even connect the headphones output to an audio/mic input, but again the level of the signal isn't technically ideal and you should be careful not to crank anything up until you've tested it at low levels.

Since I am getting Rocksmith 2014 with the cable, does anyone know if that will that work or is that only for use with Rocksmith?

guitar came today. looked good out of the box. the nut for the pickup switch had fallen off but was able to screw it back on.

my amp still works.

I'm no guitar expert by any means but it sounds pretty good to me. I bought a set of colored string that match the colors in Rocksmith to help me out a it more. the new strings do sound a little better.

i thought it came with a shoulder strap but that was just for the bag (which is crap btw, would only protect against dust and scratches.

Trying to play without a strap is very difficult. I can't get the guitar to stay steady and I have to use my arm to hold it in place which is hurting my arm. I made a makeshift strap for now which helped.
I ordered a shoulder strap so that should be here tomorrow.
this sucker is heavy too.

Started playing around in Rocksmith and learning some basic stuff. my fingers are hurting and it's difficult to stretch my hand enough. I don't really have long fingers. i guess that comes with practice though.

Thanks to this thread I pulled my acoustic guitar out of the closet the other night and played a little for the first time in 5 or 6 years. Remembered some stuff but was in pain after a little while. It was fun though.

Going to pick up a cheap amp modeler, probably the Behringer, so I can play an electric through headphones.

It's been a long while since I used it, maybe I'll break it out this weekend so I have a fresh impression, but I've got a Seymour Duncan Woody XL soundhole pickup that I remember liking.

Hm, what is your seating position like? It may be moot after you get the strap, but it also may not be, since you have an LP-style electric and you may decide you want to sit down once your shoulder starts aching...
Are those the DR strings? Do you know which gauge you got?

Haha, I have the opposite problem (playing with/without a strap). I learned to play by sitting down (took several lessons using my dad's acoustic) and now I have difficulty playing standing up with a strap. It's hard for me to bend my wrist enough. Wearing the guitar higher helps but it's still a little difficult.

Your fingers will definitely get sore, REALLY sore if you play enough. But you'll get callouses, which won't go away, and then they shouldn't hurt. Biggest thing about learning guitar (hell, anything, I guess) is PRACTICE. Tons of it; even if it's just for a few minutes.

Yes it will work. I use that cable and Abelton live to record with.

Fishman is my go-to acoustic pickup. Their thinline pickup never lets me down. For a banjo, you could probably use one of their transducer models: http://www.fishman.com/products/series/sbt/sbtcsoundboardtransducer.php

sitting in a desk chair in front of my desk/monitor. i guess i have it angled too much and should be more straight up and down.

strap just arrived so that is helping too.

If the desk chair has arms, there's a good chance it's causing problems. It's hard for me to find a good, comfortable playing position in a chair with arms.

I don't think I've ever put medium strings on an electric guitar. Given where you are, I probably would have gone with extra light or light.

Same here. I bought an armless task chair specifically for playing. You just can't get proper posture sitting in a chair that has arms.
