Recovering Data off hdd

Hi

Looking for help to recover data from a laptop hdd

340gb hdd the windows install on it is corrupted, there are files accessable through the command prompt, unforunately it wont let me move folders over, saying access is denied. It will however let me copy the files over with copy *.* to a usb drive. Unforunately there is thousands of files in many many directories with subdirectories etc.


Is there an easy way to copy the contents over of one folder and have it do all of the subdirectories? the move command says access is denied .

Boot to a live gnu/linux cd/usb, and copy them from there.

I tried this already, unfortunately it will not let me mount the partition in linux. Giving me a $Mdirr or something mismatch error. I tried using ntfsprogs to fix it but it will not mount the partition to fix then ntfs partition lol. It's a struggle! Only had luck booting off a windows 10 usb and using the command prompt on the PC. If i plug it into another PC files show up but i cannot access the files as they are in the USERS folder, even after changing permissions to EVERYONE it will not open them (files are accessibile in the cmd prompt, but dir by dir *.* will take hours

Try a USB to SATA adapter. Remove the HDD and read the HDD from another computer.

You can save some money and buy the USB 2.0 version. I actually wonder if there would be an issue with 3.0.

I have attempted it on another PC it is not giving me access to the user folder though, it askes for admin privileges to access it, once allowed it looks like its loading (green bar going across on windows 10) but it never opens.

I have a program I need to find the name of on my other computer that allows you to simply right click a file/folder and take ownership. Really simple. Let me see if I can find its name.

OP - This might work better, as the standard windows way will try to take ownership of the top level folder and all below it, so depending on how much data there is there, it might take a while, thats the reason the green bar is still moving

simplest advice is to let windows do it's thing. it will take a while. just let it run and go do something else for an hour.

Try to use third-party data recovery software to retrieve your data on hdd. recuva and data reocovery wizard worth to try.

Agree with this idea. I personal used this kind of method to recovery hdd data with a system recovery software. It was smooth and successful.
