Anyone ever get a call from the U.S. Marines? I got this call saying that they saw my resume online (Career Builder) and they have several IT opportunities available and to give them a call back.

They probably want me to enlist first before you get those so called ?IT opportunities?

What do you all think?

IT opportunities = In Tank Opportunities

Don't let them fool you. If you are thinking about joining the forces, go for Air Force. They have the most money and Air Conditioning.

They figure if you can work a computer well, you can definitely operate a gun.
On top of that you may have some FPS gaming experience!

They want you to enlist. If you aren't interested in being in the military then do not return their call.

The armed forces use the sneakiest recruiting tactics ever. I feel bad for the young kids fresh out of high school that get suckered into joining the military with all of the half-truths they tell.

In all fairness, you are looking for a job. I'm surprised it was the Marines who called you though. It's the Army that is having a hard time meeting its goals. The other branches, as far as I know, are doing quite fine. They might actually need someone for IT

Having spent 9 years in the Navy I'd say this is my recommendation too.
I can only assume you want to be one of those guys who would like to collect military benefits without actually being the military, so Air Force is probably the way to go.

If I could do everything again, I would have probably Joined after high school or something. But now its to late. I'm 26 and heavily invested in trying to finish my college degree.

Edit: Air force would be great, but last time i spoke to a recruiter they said I was too old already.

All marines go through the same basic - even the officers. You wouldn't just be the traditional network professional.

After they increased the enlistment age, reduced the ASVAB requirement and have made some seriously bad choices on who they let in (quite a few recruiters have been fired and several hundred have been remprimanded for recruiting violations).

Also, the Navy is still the only branch I know of that guarantees your rating (MOS), IN WRITING before you even sign.
You dont like what you see, you dont sign.

Also, dont go Nuke. It sounds great coming from the recruiter and at MEPS, but it sucks.
They dont tell you about the 90% attrition.

And the Navy was forced to cut back on personnel, from about 400,000 to around 360,000. Thats one of the reasons I am not in anymore. So dont go into a recruiters office unless you are prepared to tackle somthing like Nuke, Advanced Electronics or the SEAL/EOD/Diver programs.

They dont need warm bodies for deck hands as much as they used to.

isn't this the way it is with all services..

I mean... you have no obligation until you have signed. Usually the MOS that you will be training in will be in WRITING on the contract/annex's and or attachments that you will sign upon entry. If you don't see it.. you don't sign it.

Here is an enlistment contract:

Your link was not working. I guess about.com doesnt like hotlinking.

And no you dont have to sign if you dont want, but the other services rarely make an effort to guarantee your MOS, in writing, before you join. Thats extra and you always have to fight for it.
With the Navy its standard that they tell you exactly which A-school (an therefore, rating) you will get out of boot camp.
However, I recomend NOT signing if its for anything called Apprentiship. That just means undesignated Seaman, Airman, Fireman or maybe Constructionman, and you darn sure dont want that.

I will agree to that. Do not join the Navy with no A-school. The guys that joined without a rating are the bottom and they have to do ever crap job on the ship.

A-School?

Thats what the Navy calls their MOS training, I believe. For the Army, its called "AIT" or also known as Advanced Individual Training.
