Anyone ever get a call from the U.S. Marines? I got this call saying that they saw my resume online (Career Builder) and they have several IT opportunities available and to give them a call back.

They probably want me to enlist first before you get those so called ?IT opportunities?

What do you all think?

IT opportunities = In Tank Opportunities

Don't let them fool you. If you are thinking about joining the forces, go for Air Force. They have the most money and Air Conditioning.

And sheets.

Wrong: In the Marines officers candidates go straight to OCS. In the Army, officer candidates go through regular boot camp then OCS.

Absolutely.

I was an "IT" guy for the USMC for a little over 4 years. Yes, there are jobs like that. If you do get an IT job with the Marine Corps, you are most likely going to be working an easy skate job, right along side of EDS and their NMCI.

The bad thing is that the majority of the schooling for anything relating to communications technology is based in 29 stumps, california. :frown:

By the way, I just joined the forums today. Been coming here for overclocking info for a couple of years now, and I figured I might as well join up.

I hate EDS and I hate NMCI.
I got stuck being a point of contact or a CTR or a CLO or somesuch nonsense my last year at China Lake. They never gave me any access or privledges but I was expected to fix all my local users problems.

An a completely different note, whats wrong with 29 Palms? I thought it was a nice place. You guys always sent us plenty of cute Hospital Coremen.

I remember getting a few calls from a Marine recruiter. He asked me some questions, which I answered, but I politely told him that I wouldn't be joining the Armed forces. He was glad I didn't waste his time. There is no need to be a dick about it...just tell them that you aren't interested, but that you know the Marines are badass.

You should not even CONSIDER the Marines unless your heart is in it 100%, otherwise they will break you. The Navy would be a better branch for technical training. And since the Marines are a part of the Navy really then that makes Marines a good second choice.

Being a Marine will get you in a LOT of doors you otherwise wouldn't get in in the future, especially in the IT field. It automatically screams reliable and dependable to potential employers.

BTW, don't call them back unless you're prepared to get the full spiel. Marine recruiters are some of the most tenacious people I know. they're like pitbulls with lock jaw. Once the sense you're even slightly interested they do EVERYTHING to get you in. They'll take anybody. You see, their belief is the D.I. at Paris Island will break you and reshape you into what they want you to be, or they'll just weed you out. so the recruiters aren't that selective.

lol @ you guys saying they will send people they recruit for IT to fight. Who do you think manages/works on the massive communication networks? If you don't know, don't talk like you know. More specialized you are, the more useful you are, the more protected you become: its a sad fact that an engineer or tech can be more "valuable" than a grunt. I am in no way dismissing the extraordinary contribution of infantrymen or saying that its right, but thats the way it has to be and is.

Every Marine is a rifleman, first and foremost.

Yep. You would be at the discretion of the USMC and they can put you anywhere at anytime doing anything they want you to do.

IIRC communications people/equipment are generally the first to get targeted since they are so valuable to getting things done and they have the equipment that is used to coordinate everything.

Yeah, they cold call for enlistment based on resumes seeking civilian employment...no reason not to call back, I suppose but make sure you know what they're talking about

Yeah right.

Maybe in a conventional war. These days, they're lucky if they ever leave the FOB...

Actually both the Navy and the Marines now have dedicated IT ratings..
and VERY good training so Im told.

personally after seeing how Marines do business compared to the Navy (read this as MUCH more like a civvy job than the Marines)
but IF you do decide to look into this.. (and i recommend you do as not only is it free world class IT training.. but work experience as well..)

GET IT IN WRITING.... before you SIGN ANYTHING...

Im an IT guy in right now. How long ago were you in?

The job in garrison is pretty skate. NMCI does suck though, they charge for everything they can think of, and its overly complicated to get very simple problems fixed.

In the field though its different, we setup a whole network, and we actually get admin privledges.

29 Palms wasnt all bad. The weather did suck but I had fun while i was there. Alot of cool places are just a few hours away.

Jnetty99: feel free to PM me if you want some more information.

In all fairness, you are looking for a job. I'm surprised it was the Marines who called you though. It's the Army that is having a hard time meeting its goals. The other branches, as far as I know, are doing quite fine. They might actually need someone for IT

FYI - The Army has hit is recruiting goals for the past 13+ months.

Coincidentally, the army has also LOWERED its recruiting goals repeatedly over the past 13 months. It is rather easy to meet a goal if you wait until after all the recruitment numbers are in for the month and then issue the 'goal' for that month.

The very good training Navy IT's get is becoming more and more useless.

Back when we had the IT21 project, converting radioman to IT made sense. But since we have the NMCI contract now, it obsoletes a lot of the jobs an IT was supposed to do. Way too many of them are being relegated back to radio tasks, even aboard the ship where they dont have NMCI civilians.

Once again another grand scheme the Navy just cant seem to manage. One of the many reasons I got sick and left.
I think I like Army way better. Patton said "let them suprise you with their ingenuity".
The officers in the Navy say thats what they want too, but the instant they spot some little detail they dont like, they jump in and try to micro-manage everything. (Which many of you know is NOT good leadership.)

This happens with ensigns fixing a divisional maintenence board, or an admiral reorganizing the entire shore command structure. The only difference is admirals know better than to publicly blame their subordinates.

Sorry didnt mean to rant. I was at a messed up shore staion for my last tour. I wish I had gone to another ship. Things actually get a little easier when you have to focus on the important stuff.
