Someone over on FW read through the details on this and determined you are only getting a couple of bucks per piece of equipment. Something about a recycle fee or something. Look into the details before you jump on this...

i read the article from cnet last night. they don't really pay you, they will give you coupons toward future on-line HP purchases. what the article didn't clearly mention is that they still charge you for recycling fee.

but it's still a very good thing for what HP is doing. most of other recycling companies dump their stuffs to poor countries where children scavaging the toxic parts for metal (gold and copy) for under $1USD per day.

I hope other PC manufacturers will follow HP's program, especially big and rich companies like Intel, Dell, Gateway, Micron, IBM and Microsoft. And do something like giving more discount coupons to their brands than others?

Kudos to HP.

But, in terms of rewards, this offer is pretty RIDICULOUS! You send a monitor, it costs ya $29 and you get a 30 off 40 coupon. LAME!

Dell does do this... and they will give you a 10% home s+p coupon for doing so. I found out it only costs about $8 to ship to an old 486 IBM PS2 Model 70 to a site they gave me in-state (USPS parcel post).

http://www.dell.com/us/en/dhs/topics/segtopic_dell_exchange.htm

Be patient though, I sent my computer off on 12/31 and just got my coupon. I got an e-mail saying "please tell us about why you decided not to send it in" in a survey form before I got the coupon.

[EDIT] Maybe I'm cruel, but I'm one of those people who believes that, as far as prison labor goes, the harder the better.

Is the dell coupon stackable with other coupon offers?

This will soon be moot. Congress is expected to approve a new fee (read TAX) of $10 per tech item as a recycling fee. This fee will be used to fund grants for companies that actually do the recycyling of tech items. There was just an article on this in one of the tech mags.

Are you kidding? I've interned at HP for the past 4 years and I've toured the recycling plant. The place is incredible. Kinda funny, saw these kids I went to HS with doing the recycling while i was walking around in my business cas stuff observing them like they were monkeys...ok it wasnt THAT bad but it made me feel better for being a nerd in HS!

Computers / Computer peripherals / Monitors / Printers / etc...

EPA tells you how to dispose of your computer's in an economical way for free, if it is unusable. I know NJ has state sponsored recycling programs. Some states require you to pay to dispose safely, but it's such a nominal fee. It's worth it. You can check how, here.

Usable Computers?, then you may want to donate them somewhere for a tax write off.

Before you do any of this, you might list your PCs in FS/FT -- now that PCs are so fast and are running DOS-hostile Win XP, some people are wanting to pair a $35 KVM switch with an old 286 / 386 / 486 / p1 box for DOS, MAME, and/or Win95 games that don't run well or at all on modern PCs. Reuse is even better than recycling.

The same with ancient games: you might not ever want to play Wing Commander 1-2, Ultima Underworld or Blake Stone again, but someone out there does.
