<< must be met with purchases to which no other coupon or instant savings offer applies >>

Yeah - that answers my question. This sucks. It'd be different if they were offering 100 bucks off a laptop instead of primarily i845 SDRAM-using P4 systems. And the inability to combine this offer with another coupon is crappy, you'd probably get more money for your used system on eBay. Hell, I have a fully-functional old Commodore 128-D whom someone has offered me 50 bucks for. Basically with this line alone, you couldn't use this "offer" on ANYTHING that has a "price break" on it. Staples really had their legal people author this one.

They'd make twice what they're giving you with TEN computers harvesting the precious metals from them - gold/silver/copper traces on CPUs, expansion cards, RAM, motherboards, etc. A 386 system ALONE is probably worth 20 bucks AT LEAST just for scrap and precious metal traces alone. There's actually a company that survives ALONE harvesting precious metals from salvaged old computers from businesses because it's far too pricey to toss them.

Read the restrictions again.

It doesn't say you can't use the coupon with items that have instant savings, it says you can't use the instant savings to meet the $100 threshhold for the coupon.

It's the same legalese they use for the online coupons. It's boilerplate, nothing new.

If an item is $80 with $20 instant savings (it rings up as $60), it only counts as $60 towards use of coupon. You would still have to buy another $40 worth of stuff (not $20) in order to use the coupon.

FYI -I was in Staples earlier today picking up another Visioneer 8100 scanner and they had flyers at the register about this program. Both the flyer and store manager stated that you need to donate a complete computer CPU unit (working or non-working) in order to get the $100 off a new computer or $20 off $100 coupon. The are not accepting unassembled junk parts including defective monitors. If you are planning on donating something you might want to check with your local B&M and check with the manager before you lug your old junk down to Staples just to have it refused.

I think it's great that Staples is doing this. I am not sure what they are doing w/ the really really old stuff that nobody wants, but hopefully they are handling them responsibly like they said.

In California, it's illegal to dump monitor in the trash. You can find more info at CIWM's website. Link to California Intergrated Waste Management website For folks in other states looking to find out more about recycling electronic waste, here's a good place to start.

Sorry about the confusing law thing.
I checked with staplews today and my local one says the head office sent them a memo that they received lots of calls on this issue. They put up a link atRecycle to show where to go to recycle whole machines pentium or above, but they will not take machines at staples unless you buy something

Well, you can buy something and return it later, like the next day or so..... Just to get rid of your old junk.

Yeah, I packed up three working machines, and a monitor, and they didn't want them unless I bought something....

Have to find another way to recycle or get rid of them

well according to the web site you trade in a "computer." When I looked on merriam webster online dictionary it said a computer was:

<< a programmable electronic device that can store, retrieve, and process data >>

. Hmm, perhaps I'll bring in my old useless 486 chip I picked up for $1 at a computer show. Then again, a floppy disk has a electronic device that can store, retrieve and process data If they are saying a cpu, just bring in a chip from somewhere

Lark888 and Kenny0829

If you have any PS2 microchannel sound or ethernet cards I'll help you recycle them.

Well I didn't have any problems dropping off my 286 Hyundai PC with CGA monitor (yes that's from the same company that makes cars). You're suppose to use the coupon today, but the manager said they'd honor it anytime (made him write it on the back of the coupon). Didn't buy anything either.

Anyone else told this? I dropped off a couple of 486s and got a coupon but used a $30 off $150. Would like to use the $20 off $100 another time if I can.
