Crap I lost my hat in the very beginning of the game in that first mission. Figured I'd be able to steal hats off corpses but the game won't let me pick up other peoples' hats off the ground.
Your main hat you can get back from your horse. I keep two outfits and two hats on my horse. Also you can take a hat off a corpse if it fell off of him before they died it seems.

I'd count RDR1 as one of my favorite games of 30+ years of gaming, but I'm mixed over RDR2.

The attention to detail is fantastic, its gorgeous, and the story so far is good.

The bounty system however is pure bs. So far I've been attacked in town by rival gang members, run around not doing anything and when I finally defend myself suddenly I'm guilty of assault and the law shows up. When a lawman kills you, they take your money....and you still have the bounty when you revive. I shot someone in the woods after they drew on me and despite being alone in the woods with no one around somebody with a telescope must have recognized Arthur Morgan and reported it. That or my horse works for the local sheriff. Its truly uncanny how someone on 500 yards away can positively ID Arthur Morgan despite the fact I'd only spent less than an hour in the region. Also if somebody runs in front of your horse and dies guess what? You got a bounty. Saw an npc kill another with their horse in town once, the Sheriff was standing next to me. Did anything happen? Nope.

As far as I can tell, bandana's don't actually do anything outside of story missions. Supposedly they make your wanted level drop faster after you take it off, but apparently people who have never met you can still ID Arthur Morgan and you still will have a bounty anyway.

The game is so good in so many ways but bounty/justice system is just killing it for me. I say this as someone who is trying to play a high honor character. I can't imagine trying to play this game as low honor, you'd probably have to avoid towns all together.

I can't get the hat off my horse. The only clothing items I have stored on the horse are gloves and a bandana.

I just started gaining some bounties now. One was for $5 because it was part of a story mission to collect debt. It happened to be in a town where someone witnessed me beating a guy up to get the money.

Then on my way to collect a sheriff bounty I saw a guy being transported in cage by two people where he was begging for help. I freed him but had to kill the two guys transporting him but the prisoner gave me a tip on a bank I could rob.

When I got to my objective I couldn't do it because "previous crimes". Even though I had no wanted level.

You can remove a bounty on your head by going to the post office and paying it off. I use the mask to ride around so it makes it harder for people around the town to notice me. Only downside is they won't talk to you.

What annoyed me was I keep running into 3-4 O' Driscoll gang members while I'm riding along a path and they will try to hold me up to rob me. I obviously died there and they took some of my money. I don't know why this happened but it may have been because a few of them spotted me at night, started shooting me and in my attempt to flee I accidentally led them to my camp.

I thought the people of the camp would kill them but they didn't the time passed and it was morning. Later I got scolded by Dutch for causing trouble and bringing those gang members there. Kind of interesting how he knew and wonder if this will affect things from now on.

The detail to all these things makes the game much more interesting. Everything you seem to do has some consequence or so it seems.

Oh and for the hat you can find it back at your camp in your clothes chest if you lost it.

This is sort of how I felt about GTA. You could be in the middle of the desert and snipe someone silently and magically the police are alerted.

I ran into another wanted situation, actually two. One was a random encounter at night by the salon in valentine. A woman wanted me to dump a body in a pen of hogs. It was already night time and there weren't that many people around.

As soon as I dropped the body in the pen it said to go back and talk to the stranger. But as my luck would have it I was immediately being investigated or wanted. Seems there was some random guy standing by one of the buildings and it was odd he didn't do anything when he saw me carry the body but as soon as I dropped it in the hog pen I was wanted. I had to flee immediately while whistling for my horse and ended up with a $30 bounty on my head.

Not sure if I'll run into that stranger again probably not as they may be chance encounters. But that kind of made me mad. Seems like the longer you progress the easier it is to become wanted.

WTF? I walked into a house at the beginning of the game, walked up to the furnace, and now Javier stepped in front of me and I'm completely stuck in the corner of the house. He is just standing in front of the furnace and warming his hands and there is nothing I can do. I'm completely stuck standing in the corner of the house. This game should have failed certification for such a simple bug. Great now I have to go back to an old save.

They should also patch the hdr implementation on PS4 pro while at it.

That same thing happened to me in a hotel when an NPC happened to be sitting there cleaning a window right as I opened the door. Because the door didn't close I was stuck.

I got out of it by focusing on the npc and drawing my gun on them. It freaked them out and they ran away after I holstered it.

Yea unfortunately a ton of this game is not explained. Thank god for the internet or I'd be lost over lots of things.

The longer you play, the more stuff gets explained, the more the game opens up, unlocks stuff.

I've been playing so damn much this past weekend and the more I play the more I love it. It's definitely a slow burn game. It didn't hook me immediately either but the more and more I play, the more it sinks its teeth into me because of the world and how carefully everything is crafted.

One instance I heard screaming and gunshots, the closer I got I heard an animal growling. I got much closer to investigate and the guy must have died as the cougar saw me, ran towards me, my horse got spooked, threw me off, I didn't have time to pull all any weapons and the cougar killed me. Even though I died it was one of those HOLY CRAP moments.

You can tell when predator animals are close by as your horse will start acting up even if you're bonded high with it.

Another time I was riding my horse down a road and a stagecoach was getting robbed and the guy yelled for help. I killed the two people robbing it. The guy that was getting robbed of the stagecoach said that the stagecoach was insured by the company that owned it so he didn't care and I could take it anyways for helping him. Easy enough. I looted the stagecoach and rode it to a fence for even more money.

It opens up very slowly. I can't find a total amount of hours I have played. But I'm only 11% done the story. My PS4 crashed a day ago and my save was gone so I had to start over. I've already hunted the legendary bear and took the hide to a trapper. The double barrel shot gun helped, I think it took 6 shots to the face. Also at that trapper you can buy a second gun holster. I heard you get one as part of the story later so I didn't buy one right now.

I recall the incident with the cougars but the guy wasn't dead yet. My horse threw me off and the cougars got me in one hit. Everything is so detailed including animations. I knocked something off a ledge and was able to catch it mid air while it was falling lol.

The random NPC events seemed to be timed too. There was a lady that was stuck under a horse because it had died. I lifted the horse and helped her get up and there was an option to give her a ride home. As I brought my horse I realized I had a deer carcass on the back and she was like do you mind, I can't fit on there. While I was figuring out what to do with the carcass, she then said nevermind I'll find my own way home and started limping down the dirt road. I couldn't interact with her anymore after that.

Also to the left of your camp at horseshoe there is a burnt down town. Go there to find a gold bar in a lock box that's worth $500. I used it to upgrade my camp. There are several other places I'm sure you can find hidden valuables.

Also for bounties, the best way to get rid of them if they are too expensive is to go to your camp, donate all your money, then go surrender to the authorities. You will get put in jail but they won't take any of your money.

Another option for being wanted is to shave, cut your hair and change your hat/shirt. The bandanna doesn't help much it seems to cause more trouble than needed. Once you shave and change clothes before going to the town you are wanted in, you won't be recognized and it's like not having a bounty. Unless you probably wear the same clothes and then I think they will figure it out.

I'll probably give this a whirl at some point because of the production value but I'm not big into western themes. I did enjoy the first but it took loads of time to play and this sounds even more true with this game. From what I've see though it does look absolutely gorgeous which, of course, I appreciate but also seems quite different from the original? Well, I know red dead revolver might be considered the original...

Also, can I play Liar's Dice in this one? That might have been my #1 source of income in RDD lol

The exact same thing happened to me, for the same reason. I hoped off my horse because I thought it would let me give her the seat (being the gentleman that I am) but that wasn't it, and before I could figure out it was probably because of the bear skin on my horse she said she'd figure it out and I couldn't do anything. Pretty surprised they would have an interaction just time out like that...

What I'm also curious about is if these events will happen again another time. Perhaps you can have an opportunity to complete them later. For example helping the hooker by the alley of the saloon, I also didn't complete because it ended up with me gaining a wanted level and instead of going to talk to her like the game was telling me, I had to flee.

HA! I came across that woman early in the game, before I had a grasp on my controls, and hit R2 which shot her square in the head! She be dead. I tried loading an earlier game but she has yet to reappear.

Go to your camp and you can walk up to your chest by your bunk. You'll have your main clothes and anything you bought there including that hat you lost.

You can do this within a hotel if you rent a room too.

That gang hasn't killed me yet...I just ride by them a ways, they give chase but my horse is much faster and I turn and shoot them as they come.

Last night I was on my way back to camp when they attacked me. I decided to just go to camp figuring they would give up the chase but they didn't. I stopped at the edge of camp to kill them and the two guys from my gang that sit in the woods as look out, helped kill the enemy. The game immediately cut to the sky (as if you went to sleep) and it became the next day and I was in camp with Dutch giving me a hard time about it.

My point is they can help you kill bandits that you lead towards camp.

I guess that's what happened in my case too. But that gang actually ambushed me by blocking the road with two stage coaches and two guys on horses on either side.

As I was riding along I heard "there he is boys, let's get him." I didn't think anything of it but they actually rode out of the trees with stage coaches and blocked the road. This was all before I had a wanted level in the game too. It was quite odd.

Yeah for me I had passed into strawberry area where I'm wanted and have a $175 bounty. As I crossed back into the Valentine area they were waiting for me and I could hear one of them say, "The one that gets him gets all the gold" and they gave chase. They followed me right up to my camp where I made a stand.

Well I went with the Xbox One X with the $100 off when purchasing RDR2. It also came with Fallout 76 which is awesome if I can stand playing it on a controller. If so I won't have to buy it on PC, woot! I think I got one of the last few Xboxes at Gamespot (I went Saturday afternoon) and they sold the last PS4 pre-order RDR2 game when I was there. I wasn't sure I'd actually get a game and system but I did.

I haven't played a ton yet so far but I think it's pretty amazing even though I haven't gotten very far through it. I watched a video yesterday of fails while riding a horse in cinematic mode... LOL.
