There's plenty to do outside of missions though. Plenty of challenges, people to rob, trains to rob, banks to rob, animals to rob, and rival gangs to rob.
I've stayed away from robbing random things because I wanted to play a decent character role. There is a lot to hunt and I've explored about 3 full sets of treasure maps and have close to over $5k in money yet my camp is always complaining that we need money lol.

It's actually insanely difficult to lose honor if you're trying to maintain a "good guy" role. Go rob a train then chop some firewood and you'll break even on the honor. As for the money, there's two different funds to keep track of - your money and the camp's money. If the camp is complaining about money, you might want to consider dumping half of your wallet into the camp funds.

Well, I think I have figured out the free black arabian horse in Saint Denis. None of my friends have gotten it, but I have gotten it on both my playthroughs and 2 more times using saves. The one thing I'm not sure about is if you need high honor or not, I've always been at the early game cap (you can't hit maximum honor until near the end of the story). There is 2 robbery events at night. The first is a guy being held up in an alley, the second is someone tries to mug an arguing couple. Every time I've shot that second mugger, I look around and there is a black arabian horse just chilling out - though the first time I didn't notice and she walked up to me. You can pretty much get it right away, I got it last night at like 14% completion.

Edit: I think this is the best horse you can get until the epilogue (though later in the story you can just buy a black arabian). It is 1 health and 1 stamina better than the wild white arabian horse than can be tamed.

I've seen people get this black Arabian by some stables in St Dennis behind a few buildings. I mean that's without doing those quests. You do lose some honor because you are basically stealing it. But they should be chilling behind some buildings where there are some horse pens there. Several YouTube vidoes showed where they are located but I don't know if anything's changed. I haven't made it to St. Dennis yet.

I've heard that as well, but like I said the first time it literally walked up to me. I was just standing next to my horse thinking about where I wanted to go and … clop clop clop. Uh yes, hello, what can I do for you miss horse?

Edit: I should clarify. I've gotten this horse in 4 different spots in Saint Denis. I'm pretty sure shooting the second mugger is the trigger.

That's funny which is actually a good thing it happened randomly. I will have to look for it when the game takes me to that section. It took me a while to find the wild white Arabian but it's been great so far.

They are functionally the same. They both - and the third arabian you can get in the epilogue - have the second highest speed, I believe best acceleration, and best handling. The only difference is the amount of health and stamina, which doesn't matter. All of them can basically gallop permanently if you calm them while riding. There is a horse that has 1 more speed - but I did the hardest dry dash horseman challenge in like 12 minutes (17 or less required).

Confirmed: I did it twice more tonight using a save file, I had positive honor, but not high honor. The black arabian horse seems to spawn with the couple arguing about damaged china dishes. I should clarify that last night when I got it to spawn, I was trying to force the spawn. It seemed to me that it was trigger. You don't even need to shoot the mugger; I saw the horse further down the street before the mugging even happened.

Edit: And this was a different save file. I have 3 active files, last night I was using the third - today I was using the second. By active files I mean progress saved from starting a new game.

No more discussion?

Anybody learn something new? Are there more balls than just horse balls?

Dog balls perhaps?

Cats?

Squirrels?

I finished my second playthrough. Now I am just wandering the game doing all the legendary animals and cig cards. Finding all the secret stuff. Its a blast.

Finally worked up the energy to beat the main story today. Part of me feels really foolish for putting so much time into something I didn't enjoy. With all the hype and fond memories of the first one, I thought something more would come of it.

You are definitely in the minority on this. I've played through it 4 times and still casually play it.

I was super excited for RDR2. I wasn't able to play it immediately at release, so I saw a few not so favorable customer reviews before I made the move to get the game. Rather than buy the game at full price, I opted to rent it to see what I thought of it. I'm glad I went that route, because I was only able to muster the drive to get halfway through the second chapter. It just didn't feel like an enjoyable experience and couldn't hold my attention, despite not really having anything "better" to do. The level of detail and work that went into the game is impressive and to be celebrated but it overall gameplay experience wasn't enjoyable for me. I attributed it to being a "me" problem, more than the game. Maybe it's a bit of both? Shrug.

I did that with GTA IV which I hated every minute of but slogged through because I expected it to get good at some point due to how much I loved GTA III, GTA Vice City, and GTA San Andreas. To this day GTA IV is probably my least favorite game I have ever played. I hope I don't feel the same when I play through RDR2. I played it for a couple of days at launch and felt overwhelmed by the open world and put it down pretty quickly since I had just also bought a Switch and absolutely could not pull myself away from Super Mario Odyssey, which is easily my favorite Super Mario Bros game since the original on the NES back in 1986.

Though honestly I am kind of worried RDR2 will be my GTA IV from this generation. Eg a game that everyone loves but I can't get into at all. Like GTA IV, I'm not a fan of the slow and unresponsive controls in RDR2.

IMO, the controls are worse than the GTA games. I don't even remember them being that bad in the original RDR. Most missions are broken down into auto-aim fire and repeat. They included a cover system, but it's not even close to the original Gears of War or even Mass Effect. The animations are also long and drawn out and Arthur will have to reposition to perform certain things like skinning or looting. I've experienced many instances where he dances around for a few seconds in the most awkward, unrealistic manor just to loot.

I'd say all of this plus the horse controls are absolutely horrible. I can't count the number of times my horse would just trip over something stupid or refuse to do what I was telling it to do (even on bonding 4). The game is beautiful and there's plenty to do, but the story missions are just irritating and not very memorable.

Different folks, different strokes. You played it, it felt like a chore, it happens. I have muddle through games like that, I think all of us have.

RDR2 is a great game in my estimations. And that of many others. But there will always be those a title does not pull in for whatever reason. Myself, I was practically weened on western themed stuff. Gun Smoke, The Rifleman, Big Valley, Rawhide, Have gun -Will travel, John Wayne and Clint Eastwood westerns. This game scratches that itch in a very satisfying way.

I have yet to finish it. I think I'm near chapter 3 or close to the end of it. I do slowly make my way through it and each time I play it I'm amused by the world and how random things happen. Sure the first one seemed more fun in terms of gameplay but this one just has a lot more polish.

The missions seem to kind of want to push you in a way which is the only downside I would say. Like you are walking around camp and suddenly you accidentally trigger a mission because an NPC starts talking to you since you were in the radius I guess.

My roommate started playing it and he just says it's very slow. It's true it does start of very slow and remains that way up to the point where I'm at but I guess most people don't have that type of patience.

I will admit, doing a low honor (criminal) run through the game is so much more satisfying than a high honor run. High honor only gets you some slight discounts on items in the store (and I can't tell if it affects anything else other than the ending) but since the game throws fistfuls of money at you during the missions, it's kinda pointless to try for high honor simply for the discount. It felt like a proper Rockstar game when I stopped trying to maintain a high honor through the game.

When I get back around to playing this, I will do that. Even Fallout games feel different when you are a dirtbag; different enough to make for good replay value.
