I think this is the "killer app" that gets me to buy a current gen console. At first I was thinking the xbox one x is a no brainer since I have xbox and 360 games by the dozens that will play on it. But is it really a no brainer? I can play the Xbox exclusives on my gaming PCs. I have not upgraded to 4K TV or Blurays yet, and I still have a 360 slim, 360 Jasper, and modded Xbox to play all the games on. Hard to get excited about play anywhere or whatever they call it now, when I have a Gaming PC in the living room too.

The only irl friend I have with a current gen console has a PS4. I have no other way to play the exclusives like Zero Dawn, I have nothing to play the PS3 games I own on at the moment (they will work on PS4 right?) PS4 has the better controller it seems. And, I have no intention of buying more than one current gen console. I am talking myself into it right now, But, Am I missing anything in the analysis? I have not done a ton of research on them this gen, and undoubtedly have gaps in my knowledge.

Thanks for any info or features I am missing right now.

The PS4 doesn't have backwards compatibility, so you'd need a PS3 to play its catalog other than the games that have been remastered for PS4. Still, the PS4 exclusives make it head and shoulders better than the XB1 for anyone with a PC.

A few more killer apps for PS4 besides RDR2 and Horizon Zero Dawn:

1. Bloodborne
2. Persona 5
3. The Last of Us Remastered
4. Yakuza 0

Bloodborne alone is worth buying a PS4 for. Persona 5 too. Then there are some really good exclusives like Uncharted 1-4, Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5 Remix, Shadow of the Colossus, and Odin Sphere Leifthrasir that aren't quite killer apps but still very worth playing.

Thanks Steve.

I was hoping one of the models added BC, looks like it is time to give those games away. Any deals on Playstation Plus come around to look out for? I have a 4TB USB drive I can add storage with, should be good there. Now to hunt down my PSN credentials again.

Playstation Plus occasionally drops to $40 for the year (vs the normal $60 price), but it has been a couple of months at least since I have seen that deal.

Why are people referring to video games as apps?

As for the current gen, I was hoping they would throw RDR2 on PC since so many people have asked for it, but if they keep it a PS4 exclusive, I'll wait until the PS4 drops in price and get them both.

Killer application has been a saying for a long time. I remember when everyone called Halo the killer application for the original XBox back in 2001.

I'd be surprised if we don't see RDR2 on PC considering how much money Rockstar is printing from GTA Online on PC. I read an article claiming the RDR1 codebase was just a complete cluster****, which is why we didn't get it on PC. The article claimed the developers were amazed they could get it running on 360 (which was also far better than the PS3 version). It's about the only explanation that makes any sense for why we didn't get a PC/PS4/XB1 remaster of the first game, because that would have sold like crazy if they could have done it.

Killer app/application has been in use a long time - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_application

RDR2 will be on Xbox, but they have not announced it for PC yet.It does make sense that they will eventually release it for PC, as they did with GTAV. If they do, I will double dip.

Ah, I didn't know about the "killer app" phrase. Hadn't heard that before, or if I did, I didn't pay any attention to it. Thanks for clearing that up.

As for RDR2, I'll wait until it hits PC or until PS4s go dirt cheap (if it goes to PS4). I think of all the current gen systems out, the Switch is the only one that interests me and that's just for Zelda and the new Mario. This should say a lot since the last Nintendo system I bought was a Gamecube and Wii which was two years ago. Before that, it was the N64 when it was released. I just can't see spending $500+ on a system when most of the games are also on PC.

Umm it's not a PS4 exclusive, it'll be on Xbox as well. Also I'm sure it'll eventually come out on PC but will release at a later date as is usual with their games, well except for the original RDR.

How are you sure it will when the last one didn't? Do you still think RDR will eventually too?

PowerPC and Cell were the platforms last gen. But, now, with everything using PC based x86 hardware, it should make the port far less labor intensive and less expensive. /speculative reasoning

Just looking at the financial aspect, given how many people were asking (I think there was even a petition going around at one point) for a PC port of the original game, they would be insane not to eventually bring it to the PC.

Some more fantastic PS4 only games are the Nathan Drake Collection (Uncharted 1-3 remastered), Uncharted 4 and the new Uncharted Lost Legacy. I'm a PC gamer for almost 30 years and can't believe how good some of the PS4 exclusives are.

I want to play the new God of War too. I still use a 1080p TV so not concerned about 4k performance any time soon. Off to look at PS4 pro bundles.

Some games offer increased performance if you're playing at 1080p. The PS4 Pro also has a Boost Mode that works with most games to offer more performance without an explicit toggle option. Also, I know you were questioning it and brought up UHD Blu-rays, but I can say that I'm not a huge fan of using the Xbox One as a UHD Blu-ray player. There's just too much disc noise.

fyi RDR 1 got a patch today for xbox one x enhancements.
Playing it with greater graphical fidelity would definitely be cool. Off to look for graphics analysis of the improvements here shortly.

I was hoping that would be the case, as it is with PC. I.E. lower res brings better performance. Freesync support coming, or no? And that blows about the disc noise. What were they thinking?!?

Here is a RDR comparison, guessing Digital Foundary will do a complete comparison like they did with the Witcher 2 enhancement.

Freesync is in the next Xbox update, I don't think PS4 Pro supports it.

I don't blame them too much. I have one of the best UHD Blu-ray players that you can buy, and it still makes some noise. (I mostly got it for Dolby Vision support as the Sony UHD player that I have is just as quiet.) These Blu-ray players are engineered to be rather beefy devices to keep down on the noise, and I don't see Microsoft wanting to increase the size or weight (the nice players use a lot of metal compared to the Xbox One's plastic) just to compete.

Although, speaking of the drive, there is one big difference between this console generation and the last. Whenever you play a game for the first time, you usually have to preload data to your hard drive before you're allowed to play. If you do want to avoid running out of space, the PS4's hard drive is user-replaceable.

Dayum! God of War is looking superb. I was contemplating pre-ordering the GoW PS4 pro but it is kind of ugly. Still, the price is right.

I have the game pre ordered. It's getting really damn good reviews too and the graphics look like the best of this generation so far.

This is what Rock Star will do: They will release it on console. Then one year to 1.5 years later they will release it on PC, then as the new consoles release they will re-release it on the new consoles. Ultimately if it is as good as it should be I will have purchased it three times.

I'm playing GOW on a regular PS4 on a 65" 4k UHD TV and it looks damn nice. I don't know if it upscales 1080p to 4k but it plays and looks great in HDR. Having a real blast so far. And disregard my previous comment about button mashing. There is definitely more fighting strategy in the game than in previous GOW.
