You only have to pay RedHat to purchase the box with the cd's, manuals and support. If you have broadband, you can easily download the cd's from their ftp site and burn them cd yourself. Most distributions are the same in that they have free version available to download but you can also purchase the cd's and manuals either from them or at the store.

Err.... yah... obviously 9 will be coming out. The real question is when!
8 just came out late last year, I doubt they are going to release 9 this soon.

You can't mispronounce linux. The way you say it is correct. Anyone who says otherwise doesn't know any better as Linus himself (the creator of Linux) holds this same viewpoint. I know I call it "LIE-NIX" while other people seem to say all kinds of things.Originally posted by: zettler
I have never used Linux (and even mispronounced it for a long time), but I did receive a free Linux pack from IBM a few weeks ago, so how does this compare?
For the TV software do a google search on "MythTV". I downloaded but haven't tried it yet. Supposed to be pretty cool! If you are a newbie to Linux I'd recommend starting with something like Mandrake or RedHat but get the latest version instead of trying some crummier version that requires more work. What, or where, would someone recomend someone (me) obtain a copy for use as a secondary OS, or for use in a separate PC to perform Tivo type functions and record TV?

you don't need broadband to download it, I did 7.1 on a 28.8 modem @24000bps connection in 9 days with download accelerator everytime I lost the modem connection DA paused until I came back around to connect to the isp again. of course it would only take about an hour with my current dsl connection.

Hi, I know nothing about Linux, but want to download and try it. Can anyone tell me what exactly I need to download? The ISO folder on one of the mirrors contains 3.08 GB of CD images...doh. Do I need to get all that?
