if all you want to do is check out linux and see what it's like i'd recomend knoppix. it's a debian based OS that fits and runs off of 1 cd. thats right no installing no partitioning just pop in the cd boot-up and your running linux complete with full gui and tons of usefull programs includeing open office. and if you like what you see it can also be installed as a permanent OS. there is over 2gigs of stuff on the cd that is compressed down to fit on the cd and decompressed as needed.

CD1 is definitely required. The rest just depend on what packages you want to install.. I believe CDs 2 and 3 are required for most installs (most installs being the packages a lot of people use).. Of course this varies with each distribution and release.

I'm a bit new at this. How do I burn the files that I downloaded to CD to make them runnable?
You download the CD images and then burn them. It will create a bootable CD by itself. If you're not sure how to burn a CD image then check your cd writing software documentation. AFAIK nero, ezcd, and fireburner will burn ISO files.. There are probably others too..

Today at Microcenter (B&M) they had SuSE Linus personal edition for $3.99 or possibly $1.99. Sorry I can't remember which price. Just another senior moment.

I have installed RH8.0 on at least 10 different machines and, in most cases, it 'wanted' the first three CDs. If memory serves, I believe the minimal workstation option was the only install which did not require the three CDs. (But no bets on that.)

The real problem is that if you don't have the CDs it wants, it will abort the install and you either have to be pretty adept at Linux to finish the install yourself or start the install over again.

With regard to RH9, not everyone should immediately install it. Unless there is a compelling reason, I would hold off for a while. There are enough new packages that it may be worthwhile for beginners to wait at the sidelines until some of the bugs are worked out. (For example, if they decided to go with XFree86 4.3, there will be a bunch of tweaking to be done before it will work well with a wide variety of graphic cards, mice, and other input devices.) It's just my 2 cents, but I ran the last beta of RH9.0 for about 3 weeks.

well said, if you want something you have to be patient...
Yeah, but goddamn that's patient!
