RO2 Beta Update Changelog - September 2

posted by [TW]Yoshiro @ 08:22PM on September 02, 2011
- Turned on Speedhack detection and added a system to allow server admins to decide what to do with a player when they are detected using a speedhack (kick, session ban, or permanent ban).
- Fixed PreStartDuration not working properly which caused the round to start prematurely after a map change.
- Fixed getting stuck with a zoomed FOV when using grenades
- Added ability to turn off anti-aliasing
- Fixed floating meshes when a player dies
- Fixed destructibles not updating their shadows when destroyed
- Fixed DOF inside tanks
- The ranked server system is now operational
- Player progression stats are now saving and loading
- Unranked servers are now showing up as unranked in the browser
- Realism modes are hooked up and functional
- Killing a tank now gives extra points based on the number of players in the tank
- New map list: Gumrak, Grain Elevator, Barracks, Red October Factory
- Team balance changes. Commanders and top scoring players no longer get team swapped on death. The role select menu will not appear immediately to make it more obvious that you have died. Also, fixed a bug where an axis soldier could spawn on the allied team or vice versa.
- Fixed some HUD icons sticking around on the screen
- Fixed Countdown ending with time still on the clock
- Fixed automatically firing your weapon sometimes when respawning
- Fixed some issues with scoring in Firefight and prevented running out of reinforcements in this game type
- F10 will now cancel a pending server connection properly when stuck on a loading screen

Played the beta some more. RECOIL? WTF IS RECOIL?! This isn't cod. It's frustrating being such easy prey for campers, but refreshing to play a game that is actually difficult again. The hit detection is pretty impressive in this game. I thought there would be more bullet drop, but I haven't noticed any yet.

:awe:

What kind of performance are you guys getting? I've read some people complaining about performance issues. But on my slightly outdated rig it seems to play fine for me.

Specs:

AMD PhenomII quad OC'd to 3.6ghz
GTX 260
4gb DDR3

I'm playing at 1920*1080 with mostly high settings and it's pretty smooth.

I'm playing it on my i5-2500k rig, 6950 1gb, and 8gb DDR3 1600. It's runs fairly smoothly on Ultra settings at 1080p. It hesitates a bit, and I expect the final game to be a bit more optimized, but for now it runs pretty well on my rig.

Still getting some random crashes after about an hour of playing. Hit registration seems great at long distance, but totally broken within 20 feet for some reason. Anyone else noticed this?

They need to work on hip fire accuracy as well. I know hip firing isn't accurate, but within 10 feet you should be able to hit what's in front of you.

Try playing on lower player count servers, much less crashes /better play. I think it will be a while before 64 player netcode is polished up.

It takes the fastest Xeon at 3.8Ghz to barely even run a 64 player dedi server.. The server software is hardly multi-threaded, according to the Devs.

So this game is 90% iron sites eh? I hated that on Bad company2 vietnam.

I fire my K98 from the hip. Like a boss.

Just kidding. You can't hit hardly anything from the hip. Every now and then in close quarter fighting you'll have a panic moment where you just unload an entire clip from the hip on someone, but even then you still may not kill them.

But despite a few bugs and lag issues in the beta, I can't stop playing this game. I logged probably hundreds of hours in the first Red Orchestra (and the Darkest Hour mod), and I'm poised to do the same with RO2.

Oh say it ain't so.. not Battle Field 3? Crikey I never even thought to check what era that game takes place in.

LOL! Demize tweeted something a day or two ago that suggests you can put 12X scopes on assault rifles. I wouldn't be worried about having only iron sights.

@Demize99 could sworn i saw you confirm high power scopes can be equipped to assualt rilfes wsomewhere, or am i fooling my self.

This game is riduclously awesome. The more and more I play it the better it gets. As you level up your skills with different weapons it seems like the hip firing gets more accurate.

Damn you all, taunting me with your beta playing.

But that 8 bucks will buy several games at the next steam sale.

I wanted to support the devs with this game because they really are doing some innovative stuff. The game is only 40 bucks new besides. Give a true PC dev some of your cash now!!!!

Eh, I preordered, which I've never done before.

Speaking of which, does Steam not immediately charge you for pre-orders or something?

I would like to echo this sentiment. I spent a lot of time with the game over the long weekend, and it really is growing on me. The guns in particular, are some of the best, if not THE best, I've ever seen/heard in an FPS. This made for a convenient excuse to go out on Sunday and pick up a new headset - it really highlights the awesome sound effects in this game. Getting rained down on by artillery while returning fire with the sound cranked up is a pretty visceral experience, and the music is subtle but adds to the immersion IMO. Dying soldiers gargling blood and crying for mommy doesn't hurt either D: It's all nicely done.

I'm also a fan of the maps we've seen so far. It can be disorienting your first few times playing a new map, but once I got the hang of regularly checking my map in game, I was able to wrack up some solid team points in territory rounds by quickly navigating to defend/capture key areas. Squad leaders using smoke can really help with that, too. The maps themselves look damn nice, and the player animations are top notch.

There are a few things that need some work IMO, such as the command system for squad leaders and members. You can supposedly accept/decline orders by hitting F4 or F5 respectively, but you aren't given any indication of this actually doing anything. It's also not very clear in-game which squad you are assigned to or who your squad leader is, and the interface for joining squads is clunky. I am NOT suggesting this game should become Battlefield Ostfront, but I think there are some things that Tripwire could "borrow" from Battlefield in this regard to clean up the in-game squad management and communication.

Nice summary. I don't really know how to tell who is my team leader or how to find him. I've just been holding T, looking for an objective and running to it. Has anyone encountered an MG42 yet? I've played with the MG34 but I want to be able to really mow some people down.

No mg42 yet for me, but I did have the MG 34 on barracks at the start of a round, and it spawned me on the allied side of the map for some reason. I immediately set the thing up and mowed down 10 people as they ran across the street before I ran out of ammo and got picked off.

I know it was cheap because it was a glitch in my spawn, but moments like this make the game great.
