RED unveils 8K "Weapon" camera

The biggest news is their new 8192 x 4320 sensor, which will actually be slightly wider than a standard full-frame 35mm sensor at 40.96mm x 21.6mm.

As of right now, the big changes in the camera are ProRes recording internally simultaneously with R3D RAW files. These are scaled down to 2K from the full sensor.

8K WEAPON — Full Frame / Vista Vision

The new 8K sensor is 40.96mm x 21.6mm with a resolution of 8192 x 4320 and a max frame rate of 75fps at 8K.

Supposedly there's an 8K iMac coming later this year as well. Meanwhile, I'm still sitting here shooting on my iPhone

Basically it's double 4K, which is good for two reasons:

1. They're already working on 8K televisions (set to ship this year)

2. You have more room for cropping.

Cropping is a big deal not just for reframing the shot, but also for stabilization, like if you're flying on a drone - you can buy a cheaper, more jittery drone & still get good footage out of it because you can cut out the wobbly parts using a stabilization software tool:

The Prores piece is a big deal because now you can edit & preview a small Prores file rather than the whole stinkin' 8K file, and then have it grab the 8K footage when you go to transcode it into a final format (iirc you had to buy a separate module that made smaller proxies to do that before).

Actually, it's four times 4K.

4K refers to the horizontal resolution of 4096x2160, not to be confused with UHD-1 (3840x2160), which happens to be exactly four times the resolution of 1080p.

Side note, stills pulled from 8K footage would be 35 megapixels per piece. Yowza.

I've only seen a RED in the wild once, and they are a beast. Full frame 8K is going to give us spectacular video quality in the cinema. Though it's not that practical for home use IMO.

we had a film crew at work doing some promo filming of things and they were using Epics/Dragons/scarlets

watching the raw output of those on the studio monitor they brought was amazing
