https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterra..._bugged_new_drivers_killed_my_gpu_and_others/

So, there is a bug with the new Crimson drivers that AMD released (not beta, final release) that lock your GPU fan speed and because of this, many users have reported playing for extended periods of time with their fans locked to 20%.
Others, like me, got their GPU burned, in my case it didn't even reboot the PC, it just crashed the screen graphics (orange bars) and I had to manually turn off the computer. When I opened the case the GPU was so hot I couldn't even remove it from the PCI-e and had to wait until it was cool enough.
So now we have no word from AMD so far, and they haven't pushed a fix for their drivers yet, so it keeps happening to other people.
I have to admit I'm really sad that I lost my card and my money, because I have no warranty anymore and it seems it's gone forever, I'm not sure I can trust AMD after this

Unlike when Nvidia did the same thing, I doubt this will blow over quickly or quietly.

It's a bug, we're planning to fix this and some of the other commonly mentioned issues in Crimson in a soon to be released driver.

You can fix this particular issue by performing a fresh reinstallation of the drivers, but this time do not touch the fan speed setting in Global Overdrive within Crimson. This should leave the default setting and not cause this issue to occur.

The card will throttle down to 2D clocks if needed to prevent damage

Just saw this mentioned over at NeoGaf. At least AMD is aware of it.

Haha good post over at NeoGaf:
f***** copycats. the shield tablet was doing this months ago... always behind the times for amd

EDIT:

Nope, you can already here the meme ramp up. :/ Definitely not a good thing for a new software suite.

Haven't seen this issue personally on my son's 290X, but I told him to keep an eye through MSI Afterburner. Fans seem to be normal. Does this only affect some models?

I just noticed my fan profile I set in Afterburner wasnt working. My fan got set at 45% so I had no lasting problems but still strange.

Is this because people install over current drivers, when they have overdrive settings already forced on?

I uninstalled the one one then installed new one, didn't see it. But yeah, this is a nasty bug. However, I am surprised GPU die from it since they will throttle clocks when running hot.

It must be a VRM thing, not enough airflow to cool some models.

So what of those that lost out-of-warranty cards? Would be good for them to get replacements instead of telling them they're SOL, and would probably be good from a publicity side of things.

i mean, am i they only who uses his own fan profile with msi afterburner?

nvidia, amd i don't care.

i am the one who chooses my fan speeds.

my 980's have never once overheated.

nor have my 280x's

How would you prove that it was the fault of the bug?
If the user didn't touch the override setting, then, it wouldn't happen right?

I can see all those miners (or other users) with broken cards just frothing at the mouth waiting for AMD to do that.

So, this bug prevents the fanprofile set in Afterburner from working.

I mean... that's the bug... some users can't set custom fan curves.... or rather, some users their fan speeds are locked in at 20% randomly no matter what they had set previously.

You can lock your fan speed to 20% without any damage done to the card. In fact, reference 290/x are running with limited fan speed that determines the gpu clocks.
Card will throttle to prevent damage, performance will suffer.

Don't cards have built in protection for this though? If I shut off the fans wouldn't the card just throttle like crazy until a black screen?

From what I read the fan still works, just locked to 20% speed. So yea, the only scenario where this could damage hardware is long term heavy loads and disabled throttling.

Well, throttle kicks in on chip temp, if VRM's or something else hit their failure temp before the chip hits its throttle temp, then bye bye card.

I knew I should have waited before installing these, but luckily I confirmed my fan is still working properly. Way to work on that driver rep guys.

This gonna be big.
Just tried and my MSI afterburner fan curve still worked.
I feel so bad for people who lost their card to this :c

first response to that article.

and as another piece of evidence, i played gta v all day yesterday on 2 280x's and never overheated or crashed with the crimson driver.

From reading the reddit threads, it seems to be random. Who is affected, and how. People using Trixx or MSI AB, people not using it and relying solely on Overdrive. People who activated Overdrive and people who didn't. Some people report stuck at 20%, others at 100%, some in the middle, and with some of the newer cards that idle at 0%, they claim the fan never comes on.

Of course you can only take their posts at face value. But if AMD is aware of it and rushing out a fix, then the issue must have been severe.

I updated yesterday morning but didn't play anything until after I had seen the reddit post. I played WoW for a few mins with everything on Ultra, never heard the fan spin up but gameplay was still smooth. So I opened up overdrive and watched the meters while playing. Sure enough the fan was bouncing against 20-21% and clock speeds were slowing coming down, FPS had dropped form the normal 60 to the mid 40s. So I cranked the fan profile to 100% in Overdrive and it immediately went up to 48% and clocks started to rise to maximum again. After that the fan speed was adjusting automatically like normal.

Would it have killed the card? I don't know but the card was already throttling and in a more demanding game I'm sure I would have noticed a larger decrease in performance. At least on my reference design I noticed the distinct lack of fan wail pretty quickly.

Were you able to see what your temps got up to?

If the game and card runs fine after bumping up the fan speed I wouldn't worry about it.
