Redhat 7.3 Install Issues

Hello all,

A few days ago i posted a thread about the issues i was having. I had thought maybe my disks were damaged so I installed the Redhat distro into a VMWare Virtual Machine. It worked flawlessly but was unbareably slow. I did determine that the screen going blank was not cased by video driver issues (I used both the Geforce 2 driver and the Geforce 2 GTS driver). I also determined that the problem was not caused by xserver starting.

As pointed out to me (I verefied that my machine reached run level three) this is incorrect. After closer inspection my pc only made it through the first five boot tests (it goes by really fast before the screen goes blank). If someone could give me any suggestions I would be very gratified. I really want to tear into KDE 3 and the new Gnome. (Windows XP Pro gets boring)

I would like to get my Samba Windows File Server back up for my network as well.

did you say you used the GFORCE driver?

Dude... when your in a VMWARE virtual host, you don't install the video driver for the SYSTEMS card, you install the one for the video the VMWARE virtual system emulates.. its like a S3 video card or something that it provides emulation for...

If you try booting to init 3 does the screen still blank? What about init 1? Any errors during boot?

I was refering to when i install on my real machine not my vmware machine. Sorry i didn't clarify that.

How do i boot to these different run levels?

P.S. I am going to try using a different machine today reguardless.

Hey all,

I loaded redhat on a machine almost identical to mine own.

1ghz athlon
30gb hda
40gb hdb
256mb ram
tnt2
sound blaster 16
simillar mobo

mine is

1ghz athlon
80gb hda
30gb hdb
256mb ram
geforce 2 ti (ddram) <--- think this might be the problem although the only way to find out would be a little surgery.
game surround fortissimo II

It worked perfectly.
What the heck is the problem? Grr it bugs me.

When you install does it prompt you as a generic Nvidia? or does it come up as a Vesa card. I tried an install the other day and had something similar happen. I forced it to the Nvidia and came up with no video. Come to find out that 7.3 did not support that VC and I had to back into XF86Config and change it to vesa driver and then install the Nvidia driver(works great on a 900xgl and UT 2003 under Linux)

If nothing else boot to the RH linux rescue. chroot /mnt/sysimage and then pico inittab (change the init level to 3 and reboot . ) I should come up to the command line and you can start to trouble shoot from there..

Try using a vesa driver?

It forces me to Generic NVIDIA (Geforce 2 GTS).
Which VESA driver should I try? If that works I can dl the driver files for my card from Nvidia.com and install the correct ones (and i will be a happy happy camper).
