Redhat question

Probably soopid but I don't know so I'll ask.

Just installed Redhat 8.0 and it appears that it'd trying to log onto "host96-null.null.bellsouth.net". I get a message to the effect that it was unsuccessful and that to system may not operate correctly. I have a choice to retry or cancel. I cancel and everything seems to be ok.

I have no idea where it got "host96-null.null.bellsouth.net" from. All I need to do is log into the computer, not the internet.

Anybody know what's going on here and how I can correct it?

My guess is that you are seeing your own DNS entry through your ISP.

OK, how did it happen and how can I fix it? This is a new install and I didn't do any custom stuff. I've dug around but can't find any reference to this anywhere.

That's probably the hostname associated with a reverse lookup of the IP address your ISP's DHCP server assigned you.

This is normal behavior when using DHCP, do not be alarmed by it. It just merely represents your systems recognized hostname, which services often will require to perform certain functions.

The error message you received was probably related to something along the lines of an 'unrecognized' or 'invalid' hostname. Telling you to add the hostname to /etc/hosts. If this is the case you simply need to add that hostname of yours to the file /etc/hosts.

So yours should look similar to:

127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost host96-null.null.bellsouth.net

I've noticed that Redhat 8 does that by default, it's the one bug I noticed when I installed it.

edit your /etc/hosts file, and add:

1.2.3.4 hostname

where 1.2.3.4 is your ip address, and hostname is whatever hostname you want assigned to the machine.

Login as root or do "su -" from a command prompt.
