Redhat RPM Question...

I'm trying to upgrade OpenSSH and I'm having one heck of a time. Can anyone help me out here? I've tried upgrading the RPM's to no avail. I had a working OpenSSH installed but I stopped using it when I heard about the bug last month. Anyways, I'm getting failed dependencies like this:


[root@gunjack ******]# rpm -Uvh --force openssh-3.5p1-11.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
openssh = 3.5p1-6 is needed by (installed) openssh-clients-3.5p1-6
openssh = 3.5p1-6 is needed by (installed) openssh-server-3.5p1-6
openssh = 3.5p1-6 is needed by (installed) openssh-askpass-3.5p1-6
openssh = 3.5p1-6 is needed by (installed) openssh-askpass-gnome-3.5p1-6
[root@gunjack ******]#

What do I need to do to install this *blasted* thing?

The ssh rpm you're replacing is needed by the other ssh packages. Get all of the 3.5p1-11 packages and install them as a group with rpm -Uvh openssh*.rpm.

And only use --force as a last resort, all you'll end up doing is f'ing up your RPM database and making it useless.

Second get and install apt, you won't have to worry about dependencies any more.

Setup the freebie up2date account with redhat. Then you run an 'up2date' and it grabs everythign that your system needs to update.

I had the freebie up2date account and then I switched machines,,and i could never figure out how to get another freebie for my new box or switch the freebie acct to the new box. Guess I will have to get another email address and try to get the demo account....oh jeez.

Or, as Nothinman suggested, install apt-rpm. You can configure that to pick up only core OS and security files. Probably lags a tiny bit behind up2date, and it's not as pointy-clicky easy, but it's free and lets you use synaptic as a bonus.
