Reduce gas tank capacity?

I have an 18 gallon tank and I want to put something inside of the gas tank in order to reduce its capacity. The reason for this is because I would like to fill up more so that I can know if my different driving styles are having an effect on the mileage or not. I was thinking that if I could get a gas can inside of the gas tank, that'd work but I don't believe the opening to the gas tank is big enough to do this. Is anyone familiar with doing such a thing that I'm proposing?

You do know that the tank doesn't have to be completely empty for you to fill it up, right?

Yeah, just drive until your tank is about half empty instead of completely so. Then note down your miles, note down how much gas it takes to refill. And that will show you how many gallons it took you to go x number of miles. Simple!

I don't want to be carrying around 50lbs worth of fuel though if I don't have to...

So you never fill-up your tank?

Buy a Scanguage II. They are expensive but they pay for themselves quickly.

Different driving styles do affect the mileage. No experiments necessary, really.

Pretty obvious which styles waste fuel...

So you're going to carry maybe 30 lbs of stuff in your fuel tank instead?

Anyways, just do what the others said and fill it up at halfway or something. It'd be a pain to remove whatever you put in your tank if you need to go to somewhere far away or something. Plus there's a chance you'll screw up the fuel tank if you put stuff other than fuel in there.

I'll save you the trouble, drop the retard and jackass driving styles and your mileage will improve.

Or if you are still demented enough to want to try your little experiment get a 5gal gas can drive your car to empty fill with the 5 gal, drive noting mileage. Refill 5gal and repeat when it runs dry. (not necessarily a good idea but its no worse than sticking something in your gas tank)

1) Scangauges are awesome.

2) Are you serious about this? Just fvcking drive already. This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard of.

if your serious and not just being an idiot, drive your car until its empty and install a fuel cell in your trunk. you'll have a smaller capacity, AND it'll be safer in a crash!

The OP needs to:

1.) Turn 16 so he can actually drive
2.) Actually own a car
3.) (this suggestion would get me banned or vacationed)

I honestly fall to my knees every night & thank god my daughter (that demanded a MT in whatever car I get her after some ass rear ended & totaled her Miata, she really didn't care what kind of car, as long as it had a MT , did I raise her right or what? ) is so level headed & low maintenance.

Whatever car you get her? I'd be like "Get a job. You're going to learn about payments."

Or you could dump about 8-10 gallons of anaerobic epoxy down the filler neck... it should settle to the bottom and cure and then you'll have an 8-10 gallon gas tank.

It'd have to be some heavy duty shit to handle gasoline exposure, I think. But yeah, that should work.
