Are you seriously concerned about the extra 50 lbs. or so of gas in your tank? How much do you weigh? Also have you removed all of the extra seats and interior items from your car already? Is your trunk empty, have you removed the air conditioning compressor?

Yea seriously. He needs to make sure he's in shape and not fat then strip his interior and remove power steering/ac compressor, get lightweight wheels, put tape on his car to go over where the hood/bumpers/fenders meet, remove his side mirrors, lower his car, get a body kit, and take a laxative every morning.

Yeah, just drive until your tank is about half empty instead of completely so. Then note down your miles, note down how much gas it takes to refill. And that will show you how many gallons it took you to go x number of miles. Simple!

I don't want to be carrying around 50lbs worth of fuel though if I don't have to...

So you're going to carry maybe 30 lbs of stuff in your fuel tank instead?

Anyways, just do what the others said and fill it up at halfway or something. It'd be a pain to remove whatever you put in your tank if you need to go to somewhere far away or something. Plus there's a chance you'll screw up the fuel tank if you put stuff other than fuel in there.

A thing that displaces the amount of fuel in the tank should not weigh 30lbs by any means, well unless it's a 1000 gallon tank! I don't want to be carrying a bunch of fuel around that I'm not going to use since it's heavy. I want to fill up often because I fill up so rarely that it makes it difficult to see how I can improve my fuel efficiency. I'm already a hypermiler but I can't use a scan-gauge because my car is too old. Why is it so unreasonable to want to make the tank's capacity smaller w/o having to buy a smaller gas tank?

A hypermiler eh? In a vehicle with an 18 gallon tank?

So you're getting 20MPG instead of 18?

Seriously. Listen to us. This is one of the most retarded ideas I've ever heard of. If you want to see if your different driving styles change your MPG, fill it up, drive, then fill it up again. It's that simple. And your data will be accurate because each time you have the extra weight of fuel in your car - which isn't a big deal.

In reality, environmental conditions will muck with your data much more than the extra fuel weight. Having a head or tail wind while driving my Insight can literally mean plus or minus 20MPG.

I would start with sugar. It's safe to use, cheap, and can be found in your cabinets or local store.

And to really hypermile, you need to reduce your Cd, I recommend smoothing all the seams on your car with Bondo, and start getting proficient with fiberglass, so you can transform your car into a teardrop shape.

Forget the airholes, they only create more drag.

The bigger the sample the more reliable are the results. Fill the tank and drive until empty.
I cannot believe what yout want to do.

so leave it around 50% full?

OP, let's say you reduced gas tank capacity somehow and saved like 30~40 lbs of the weight. But doesn't it mean more frequent visit to gas station?

I mean, yes, you will save few $$ by limiting the capacity, but then you will have to refuel it more often since it takes less. More visit to gas station = More time & mileage wasted. And it will get worse if you take a mid-long distance highway trip.

I really want to believe you are just joking. Otherwise, well, I feel sorry for you somehow.

You can try putting a block of some kind in the car. Maybe cut a hole in the gas tank, put the block in, then weld it shut again.
