So I live in an appartment and the walls within the appartment are thin. My bedroom and my roommate's bedroom are right next to each other. We're always hearing each others sex noises. Now him and I think it's funny and OK. The ladies however, they hear the sex noises then worry that their sex noises can be heard as well. This makes them skittish. I was thinking that there could be some kind of covering I could put over the walls to muffle the noise. I was thinking of putting up a layer of soundproof drywall, but realisitically that's too much work and since it's an appartment it would be complicated. Maybe something like a foam pad that could cover the whole wall? I know that if you take a whole bunch of square egg packaging (like the kind that restaurants get eggs in) and create an array on the wall it will reduce sound to almost 0. But I don't know where I'd get them all and having egg cartons on the wall would be weird.

Any ideas ATOT??

Dude, live a little, just push the beds together and have more fun. Walls are for sissies, just don't cross swords.

Not sure if it would help a ton, but I know that a good way to reduce noise from a stereo is to hang a heavy blanket about 1" away from the wall.

Hmmm.. both decorative and effective. Good idea!

Other than adding layers of drywall (soundproof drywall is a joke) there is nothing you can place on the wall to reduce sound transmission. Try putting on music during the act or if you really want a long term solution, buy a sound masking system. These types of system play noise (white or pink) at low levels to mask other sounds. I think there are some relatively cheap ones on amazon.

It's not gay if the balls don't touch.

Reduce noise ? Then how would I know what my neighbors are fighting about in the bedroom ?

You could try foam. Look in places like walmart for egg crate mattress pads. Large and usually cheap.

I think the problem is that most apartments are built without sound proofing in mind. I know in one apartment I lived in there was nothing but a sheet of drywall on each common wall to block the noise. No insulation or anything , just air.

we use these in the offices, white noise generator

http://www.dreamessentials.com...ite_noise_machine.aspx

basically the office walls are paper thin too.. they use aluminun studs because they're fast and cheap and have no insulation..

we put them in each office and when people make conference calls, they get turned on.. it works a bit, if you're in the next room, you can't really hear them yell as much.. it'll be muffled..

i have no test case other than what I used here in the office

Watch the first episode of "Life on Mars" UK edition. Not saying you should do what the criminal does, but it works.

Move bed to other end of room, or 'move' to a different room?

Yea my place is pretty much the same way. The wall provides a visual blockage and that is all. We can have conversations as though we are in the same room.

you might want to go with the foam insulation that put on the outside of houses. it comes in 4x8 sheets of various thickness and can be bought at a lowes or home depot.

if this was your house, I would cut holes at the top of the wall and fill the walls with cellulose insulation.

They make acoustic foam that you could tack up on the wall. Not sure how much good it would do...or how much it would cost though.

Hmmm... I think I am going to see about this foam. Can't hurt to try. I wonder how I will respond when asked about the foam by the woman.

Tell them it's to prevent their heads from hitting the wall too hard while you're banging them.

All you need to create distructive sound which will cancell out the sound they are making. Just determine the exact wave of the sound and generate the inverse

I use to have a program that could take room dynamics and construction - allow you to put in multiple source frequencies and it would tell you what inverse frequencies you need to generate and where to put them *sigh* that was a few years ago. I wish I still had the program

1. "No baby, you're not loud enough to be heard through the walls"
2. "The sound only passes through the wall in one direction, like a two-way mirror" (only works on blondes)
3. Insulation in the wall would help. You probably can't do this in an apartment
4. As noted above, hanging a heavy blanket close to the wall (not against the wall) would help. Whatever you use, having a void between your sound dampener and the wall will help, because it'll prevent the vibrations from the sound from passing directly from material to material.
