There is probably an equal number of racial bigots per capita in Europe and the US. It's just that in the US it's damn near considered as a crime against humanity and it's not that big of a deal in other places so there not as many open racists over here.

In the end, humans are always going to dislike each other for one reason or another. Whites hate whites for various reasons, blacks hate blacks, Asians hate Asians, so forth and so on. So racism is overrated as the bane of human existence.

I'm happy we have that much free speech over here. But someone ought to beat them with a piece of wood, after they've been in the same room as the biggest gay black guy with the biggest goddamned **** in the world!

Personally I think there may be a higher per capita amount of racists in Europe than North America. A comprehensive survey on the topic revealed that 66% of the EU back in 1997 described themselves as having racist views (and half of them described themselves as extremely racist).

I feel that equating the two situations is actually worsening the situation and causing them to ignore the growing problem.

Wow, quite a survey! You sure that's correct?
Anyways, that'd depend on the way you define rascist.

Yes. The poll was done at the request of the Employment, Industrial Relations and Social Affairs Directorate (DGV) of the European Commission. It involved 16,154 people. It was commissioned as part of the European Year Against Racism and coordinated by INRA (Europe). The data were analysed under the responsibility of Jeanne Ben Brika and Gérard Lemaine (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris), and James S. Jackson (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan).

It was on a scale between 1 and 10 on how racist views you had, so if you pick 2, then your in the racist view category.

I agree that there is really no point comparing Europe and the US. But this is also true for different countries/regions in Europe, you can not compare the situations in for example France, Romania, Croatia, Finland and Albania for obvious reasons.
So saying anything about "racism in Europe" is difficult, if one feels the need to compare countries it would be better to compare "similar" countries such as Sweden and Norway or maybe Britain and France.

What exactly was the original blanket statement that you took offense to in regards to NesuD?y.

Read his post. I don't understand how hard it is to see it's a blanket statement. Since it's a blanket statement. Geez

He simply said:

Well Well So all that cultural superiority and tolerance Is just so much BS. Europe Seems to have just as many if not more bigots that the US. Looks a bit more institutionalized there to. The kinds of Racism sescribed in the OP are virtually unheard of in the states and have been for decades.

Seems to me that he is refuting a blanket statement - 'Americans are more racist than Europeans'.

It seems that you are going to need to label almost everything that is critical towards a country in general as a blanket statement and should post such similar comments in such cases. Of course I doubt you will - instead this seems to be a case of you taking such criticism personally.

Part of what he said was an ignorant statement and you are perpetuating this idea that it's ok to call a nation something that is only true to a certain group of people. It's like me calling America "full of hicks and yahoos".

It's wrong. Plain and simple but I don't expect someone like you to agree or even understand this concept.

Not really. Saying 'There are more racists in Europe than in the US or Canada' is not 'dumb'. It is not a statement generally applied to each and every person in the population.

I agree that this is a very touchy issue. However, ignoring this issue or calling any attention towards this issue as 'dumb' or as evil 'blanket statements' will hinder progress.

The facts will tell the truth of the situation - and to me the facts scream that Europe has a serious problem, much more so than the US or Canada.

It's not what you say but how you say it and saying it the way someone people are saying is suggesting exactly that Europe is full of bigots and racist scum even if ultimately this wasn't meant.

I also don't agree with ignoring the subject just how it is presented. Which is rather shortsighted even if people aren't doing it on purpose. I feel it's right to point out this fine point because it's all about perception and getting a distorted perception of Europeans is just as wrong as getting a distorted perception of Americans. I think you would agree since that's all I'm trying to accomplish with my points.

US and Canada has more subtle forms of this, or not so subtle depending on the subject. Do I have to bring up Quebec or Yanks, Hicks, Democrats, Republicans etc? No of course not. There's plenty of hate going around here too.

Is Europe's more serious? Perhaps. It sure looks like it's pretty serious but I tend to think it's about as bad as the US and Canada. In Europe they ban political parties, in the US they block/arrest 3rd parties.

I don't think we are gona go any further in discussing this. I made my points and I don't disagree with some of what you said as you can see.

Ahh the coveted blanket statement.

I was waiting for that.

It's clear that Europeans are racist as well, so all you liberals out there calling Republicans bigots and racists, your heros, the Europeans, are bigots just the same.

And the sheep start to chime in right on queue.

1. I'm not a liberal but thanks for using that blanket statement.

2. I'm European and know full well that racism is widespread, but saying that Europeans are racist is just another blanket statement.

There are some issues with certain groups of people in Europe (as elsewhere). The problem is certain groups seize on these issues and start preaching hate. Of course ignorant people seize on this and continue the hate. It's sad to watch or read about it. However this doesn't represent the idealism of most Europeans. Of course ignorant people will seize on such displays and claim the moral low ground on Europe's behalf.

3. I have yet to see someone claim the moral high ground for Europeans in this forum.

4. Perhaps the reason why people tend to claim the moral low ground for Europeans is because they see themselves or their nation at the moral low ground. By claiming that someone else is just as low or far morally lower makes themselves feel good about where their nation stands morally.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough with my original statement. I am in NO WAY saying all Europeans are racist, or even say most are. I'm just saying Europeans do in fact have racists in their society, as do liberal people, and conservative people. It's not one group of people, everyone has their biases and beliefs, false as they may be. Sometimes liberals like to make blanket statements saying conservatives are bigots b/c they "hate gays" and all this stuff, but they fail realize that calling conservatives brainwashed and stupid is in itself bigotry.

Fair enough.

I only call certain people brainwashed and stupid. They tend of display that very well on this forum.

What pisses me off is those people who make laws and insert ideas into people's heads that a certain group of people should be given priority over others (in the US that's Blacks and Hispanics when we are talking about Education) and when a white cop beats the sh!t out of a black person it's a hate crime but when he does the same to a white guy it's "ok".

Completely retarded. What should be done is everyone should be treated equally. You beat the sh!t out of a drunk doped up guy, regardless of race, because he is resisting arrest then guess what "too freaking bad". The moron deserved to get his ass handed to him.

If someone barely makes the marks to be accepted into college then guess what, you don't get to go in front of the line because of your race.

Laws and ideas like that are exactly what breeds hate, indiference, prejudice, and racism.

These politicians putting these things into laws and the boards and commissions that put them into practice are a bunch of hypocrites.

The worst part is they haven't got a clue even tho they are told every year that its wrong.

What makes it even worse is anyone who complains is usually branded as a racist. Brilliant.

As much as i wish it was not true...I think Rabid is correct, racism is more of a problem in europe. But that's not to say that we do not have racists or that they are more racist.

For example...you can say that americans are more murderous than europeans. Now that doesnt mean that all americans kill or that americans have insticnt as americans to kill. It is just an opinionated comparison.

Although i am under the impression that racism is passed down through the generations by parents, i do not think it is instinctual. With the rich history of europe, all the wars fought and whatnot...it will take a bit longer than the "new world" as there have been less nationality based wars than europe.

Although, i have heard some comments since 9/11 both north and south of the border where middle eastern nationalities and muslims are looked down on .... i am very upset about this.

I don't see how his comments refute what I posted since it doesn't even remotely address the fact that mass media fans the flames of hate. Which was my point.

I agree. Facts are not in question. I'm simply stating reality as well. No one is innocent. (speaking generally)

I suppose not.

Says you in your opinion. I bold that so its etched into your head for once.

If the poster wanted to clarify they could have. At that point I leave it at that being satisfied that the person isn't dumb.

I however don't hunt after people trying to get them to clarify everything they say. If they care they will read the thread and post, if not well that's fine too.

Of course it is my opinion. Almost everything here is someone's opinion.

You are basically saying that in your mind he made a blanket statement, even though it's pretty clear that he didn't make much of a blanket statement at all. You are free to perceive whatever statement as you wish, but then aren't I allowed to perceive your own statements as I wish and act against them accordingly? Hmm..quite the situation you have put yourself in.

I think you took his remarks, that there seem to be racists and bigots in Europe just as in the US, as a personal insult against yourself and other Europeans. If you perceived his statements as an insult or a blanket statement that all of Europe is racist, then I have no idea how you came to that conclusion.
