I've ordered about 10 refurb CPU's from Newegg and each one has been great so far.
I'm sure extreme overclockers purchased them hoping for a massive overclock but so long as they don't burn out the chip, it's all good .

Not everything is rosey...I ordered a refurb 1900+ and it was DOA. Shipped it back yesterday.

At least Newegg's customer service is better than the vendor I've been dealing with at work the last week+.

Thanks,

XPs and XP-Ms run cooler than T-birds clock-for-clock, but a 2200+ mobile would run 800 Mhz faster than your current chip. I don't know how much quieter your system would be, unless you're considering an underclock.

A 1ghz tbird can be run with a pos volcano 5 and a silent 80mm fan with no problems. I think aldamon is either too anal about temps or isn't doing something right

I have had good luck with Newegg refurbs, but you have to be fast when you see them in stock.

They release them once or sometimes twice a day and the good stuff sells out almost immediately. I've patiently surfed to find my deals. I bought a "refurb" Coolermaster Praetorian case that came looking new in box, everything included (saved over $50). I also picked up a "refurb" Shuttle AN35n Ultra mother board that also looked new in box (saved $30). No problems with either.

Based on that experience, I took a risk and ordered a refurb XP2800+ Barton Box version (I'm crippled with PC2700) for $90. Retail is $120.

I carefully read the disclaimers and it looks like they will REFUND for only 7 days subject to restock, and they will REPLACE DOAs free, but no cross shipping. They must receive the DOA part back and check it out before sending the replacement.

The full 3 year warranty applies to the Box versions and 30 days for OEM. Same as the new parts.

I should get mine by Thursday evening. Hopefully no DOA.

I am curious how they get so many parts to sell as refub. Do that many people return goods that are not defective?

sometimes like was said earlier here, people don't feel that they gained as much as they thought they were gonna, hence the return
i did however, buy a refurb tyan trinity 400 that was probably returned -- because some moron bent the power led pin out of place (used plug to gently pull back, fine now)

Well, I got my refurb 2800 Barton (boxed) in two days. I love newegg.

It definetly didn't look new in box. The plastic packaging had been cut. Held together by rubberbands. Obviously a return. It had some extra stickes on it, probably from inspection. I looked at the cpu and it had silver thermal paste all over it. The same with the heatsink. The schmuck who bought/returned it used SO MUCH thermal paste, I think they used enough for 5 jobs! It was all over the substrate. It took me an hour to clean off all of the silver. I was really worried that they had gotten the conductive silver into the traces and it was shorted/DOA. After carefully cleaning off all of the paste, I installed with my Ceramique. Started up. No problems. Haven't tried to OC or anything but it definetly works as advertised. It runs much cooler than my 1800 Palimino. So far about 41C with a case temp of 33C.

Bottom line: Newegg refurbs are great deals. Keep your eyes open, be patient. Know what you want, and don't hesitate when you see them in stock. If its a hot item, it will go so quick, that it may be gone before you get into checkout.
I'm a happy camper. So far 3 for 3 with refurbs.
