HI, i reformatted my computer last night and now i can't get the internet to work. I had a router all setup and working previously. But since it wasn't working, i unplugged it, and now just have the dsl modem plugged into my computer (ethernet), the wall, and phone jack. i checked my network card in the device manager and it says its installed. ??? is there something else i have to do?

i went to network connections and there is one icon there (can't remember what it says but it is enabled) ...seems like there used to be 2, with one called Local Area Connection (that is not there now).

i should know how to fix this, but i can't remember....can anyone help? hopefully once the internet is working, i can just plug in the router and it will work (or will i have to reinstall something for it too).

thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Check your BIOS settings - it took me a good day or two of pure frustration before I figured out that my BIOS settings for the Lan had reset to deactivated.

What kind of system is it?

(BTW, did you try rebooting after hooking up the router?)

Make sure you load your drivers for your NIC, they should have shipped with your motherboard.

the network card doesn't have a ? ..it looks like it is installed......

should i leave the router disconnected till i know that the internet is working?

It's always good to have an extra NIC handy that widows already has the drivers for. That way when you pop it in, you're good to go untill you figure out the problem. I suppose only extreme geeks would do that. I also have a usb ethernet adapter, for those kind of problems.

If you have a router, that means you are connected to it through a NIC. In order for your computer to be able to connect to the internet there HAS to be at least one LAC (Local Area Connection) to represent it inside Network Connections. Do you see such an icon inside Control Panel -> Network Connections?

Perhaps you should just run the network wizard to establish your connection to the router.

Any special acct settings for your DSL et al user name password etc? LAN connections probably should be set to automatically detect settings in automatic configeration.

Try this if not. Go to Start/run and type in ipconfig /release and hit enter or ok wait for the black box to disappear then type in ipconfig /renew. Wait for the black box to dissappear then reboot the computer.

If it is a add on NIC [pci] then check model number and chipset and obtain proper drivers and install them
If onboard check the motherboard model number and get the proper drivers for NIC from the manufacturers web site.

With my ISP, incredibly, the internet connection will not work unless the e-mail client is correctly configured (POP server, login, password...)

So if you have not configured your e-mail client, this could be worth a shot.
