Reformatting a hard drive....

Please don't turn this into a debate about whether formatting is worthwhile...it's been about 14 months since I built my PC and I haven't reformatted the HD in that time. I'd like to do so now, but I have no idea how to go about doing it....I'm assuming you don't just go out to the DOS prompt and type format C:\.......could someone explain how to do it please?

Win XP install? Set in your bios to boot off cd-rom, and then boot from your winXP discs. You will get the prompt to set up new partitians and format the drive during that process.

Step 1. Back up your data.
Step 2. Double check your drive for data to back up.
Step 3. Back up your data.
Step 4. Format.
