How do stop games like Unreal Tournament from going to 60Hz refresh rate? For example, my desktop is at 1280x1024 @ 75Hz, but when I go to a game at the same res, it drops the refresh rate to 60Hz. I want it to stop doing this, is there a setting or a program that does this? Thanks in advance.

Go to DXDIAG and in the "More Help" tab select Overide. Br careful you don't wipe out your monitor with too high a refresh rate.

Go to Display Properties >Settings >Advanced >Adapter and in the dropdown box select "Optimal".
This will make the refresh rate run at the highest speed that the monitor will support at that resolution.

You have a GF3 card, so I'm assuming you're running Win2k. Follow these instructions:
 • For Direct3D games in Windows 2000, run DXDiag, click on 'More Help', click 'Override...' and type in your desired refresh rate.
 • For OpenGL games in Windows 2000, follow the following instructions from Scott's Hardware Scene:
1. Click on Start / Run and type 'Regedt32' and click on OK
2. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in Local Machine, click on System
3. Click on CurrentControlSet
4. Click on Services
5. Click on nv4
6. Click on Device0
7. Double click on NV10_Modes (if you have a GeForce SDR card), NV10DDR_Modes (if you have a GeForce DDR card), NV15_Modes (if you have a GeForce 2 SDR card) or NV15DDR_Modes (if you have a GeForce 2 DDR card) (NV20 for the GF3) on the right hand side
8. Edit the corresponding setting for the given colour-depth, and resolution
For example, to set 800x600 @ 16 bit colour, go to the entry:
16 800 600 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0
Here '16' is for the colour depth, '800 600' is for the resolution, and the next 7 settings are the monitor refresh rates. Do not remove the trailing zero!
9. Remove all the monitor frequencies that you do not want. The drivers will default to the lowest setting listed for the given resolution

First of all, thanks for the help. You guys were right in assuming Win2k.

EDIT: Ok I've just tested out the settings and they work well. I went ahead and took off all the 60Hz on all resolutions, so the default now is 70Hz. It's not a bad thing to have it at 70Hz all the time does it? Oh and by the way I am currently using an LCD.

There's no need to worry about refresh rates and flicker with an LCD panel, the LCD cells are either on or off, so an image displayed at a refresh rate as low as between 40-60Hz should not produce any more flicker than one at a 70Hz refresh rate.

Look, the problem could be much more easier to solve.

Here's the drill.

You may using your desktop in 32bit colour depht, and UT usually defaults 16bit. Now the thing is that your windows stores (or your monitor if you have a desktop system) the hz rate for each resolution, DEPENDING on colour depht. So set all hz rates both in 16 and 32 bit.

Yes, by saying he was using a LCD monitor LOL, what difference does the refresh rate make?

to all the guys who said to use dxdiag, THANK YOU. I posted a similar question to this in VIDEO, and got no help at all. You have solved my problem though. I consider you to be gods among men.

No no, I wouldn't have asked if I didn't have a problem. My LCD, which is a Sony SDM-M81 18.1", actually has something wrong with it at its 1280x1024 native resolution and 60hz refresh rate.

I would describe it as a "line of delay." It is a vertical line on the left side of the panel, and when scrolling up or down the picture left of the vertical line would refresh or trail the right side by just a split second. I checked it with a different monitor and it did the same thing. It is only very noticeable when playing fast paced games like UT.

So by making the refresh rate default higher, the whole screen can look beautiful and I also don't get that delay between switching refresh rates anymore. And for some reason, my games run even better, maybe it's just me or what.

Should've explained this earlier, but oh well, thanks guys.
