Refresh rate relationship

My Radeon 9800np has a refresh rate of 75 Hz. My Viewsonic monitor is set at 75Hz. The manual on my monitor says that I can go as high as 118 Hz @ 1024 X 768. Is there any benifit from setting the refresh rate of the monitor higher? What is the relationship between the refresh rate of the monitor and the graphics card? Any chance of damage?

Your graphics card controls what refresh rate you're using, as it is the device that puts out the signal. Monitor takes in whatever your graphics card puts out, so the refresh of the monitor and graphics card will always be equal.

You should set the refresh rate of the as high as your monitor will allow. This helps with eye strain. Definately a noticeable difference to your eyes. Example: if you run your monitor at 1024x768 in the control panel look and see what the highest in the refresh rate the card will put out at that resolution. If it is 100 Hz goto your book for the monitor and make sure it will accept 1024x768 at 100Hz. If it doesn't repeat with the next highest refresh rate.

I saw a real difference when I bumped mine up. Although now I don't worry about it now with my 18" LCD.

For most of us we'll see a big improvement after long periods at the screen. I noticed a clearer picture right away.

Too high could actually be bad if your monitor doesn't have the video bandwidth. It will cause blurryness. I personally can't see any flicker past 75Hz. This is acceptable for most people, but some people could see flicker until 85Hz. Depends on you.
