I just went on a fridge hunt and bought one from Lowe's, no frills but works great so far. if you buy at Lowe's go to ebay and buy one of those 10% off coupons for $1.50 or so

So I'm buying a house and the owner has a Samsung fridge and washer/dryer set that they're willing to sell to me. Haven't talked price yet but how much should I be willing to take these on for considering I have no idea about their wear and tear and they'll have no warranty? They seem relatively new but I don't have the model numbers. I can post pics.

That isn't going to happen again-with either refrigerators or dishwashers. Our seven year old LG just died (compressor burnt out). Dishwashers are pretty much disposable now-good luck getting parts. From talking to appliance salesmen expect 3-5 years for a dishwasher and the seven or so we got for the frig.

I guess the only advice I can give is they are all POS, get the cheapest you can get by with.

Fisher & Paykel, Miele, Bosch.

The linear compressor used in LG units is neat in concept but very susceptible to knocking damage if the unit is moved while energized. The tin can format isn't ideal for a voice coil motor! Semi-hermetic types are rarely seen in smaller domestic sized boxes though.

Well, I CAN NOT recommend Sumsung! Bought a $2500 french door fridge with lower freezer. Worked great for about 2.5 years before it started having problems. The little coil and drain is located in the back wall of the fridge. They cheaped out on the housing. It has rusted through and the rust has blocked the drain. And the coils are now icing up constantly. As the ice melts, water builds up in the bottom of fridge compartment which I have to clean out regularly....

I've called out repairmen twice. There is no good repair and the entire back panel housing is not available as a replacement part apparently..... So usually they repair guys just try to blow out the drain which works for a couple months before it starts all over.

So now, about once a week, I clean out standing water at the bottom of the fridge.

I've been eyeballing new refrigerators also and would love to know which is the most durable and reliable.

I was hoping LG might be better than Samsung. I have LG washer and dryer which I have been very happy with....

I have this exact problem with my Samsung. Very annoying.

I currently have a very simple side by side Amana that's been going strong for 18 years (think Windows 98 days).

My girlfriend had the exact same problem. So, I googled around and fixed it for her. In short, take off a rear panel, copper wire down the drain thingy, which extends it as a heat sink, voila issue fixed.

Get a brand known for making fridges and appliances. No hip brands like Samsung. Spend under $1k and plan to replace it every 7 years.

My ge is on year 10 a d I'd buy it again.

agreed. Especially if it says "Frigidare."

I'm also skeptical of the new fancy ones with all the gizmos attached. Just more stuff that breaks, and none of it related to the only job that the unit is supposed to do.
You don't want cameras in your fridge?

Tell him to take them. Did the listing specifically state they were not included?

Just get new appliances when you move in. That way you get what you want, not what your stuck with.

Gey a quiet dishwasher! Had a bosch and now a ge that is quiet.

I'm in the same boat with Samsung. I have one thats barely 3 yrs old and the ice maker is not making ice anymore. Very frustrating especially when the salesman offer a 5 yr extended warranty for $100 and I declined.

I still have the fridge (Kenmore I think... it just says "Manufactured for Sears Canada") that came with the house. I'm not sure what kind of compressor it has, I just know it randomly likes to make weird noises (defrost cycle?) and it still works. So there's that.

I used an aluminum wire, and it did not work. Was thinking about switch to copper, but what about galvanic corrosion?

I hope LG is better than the others, but who knows. I just bought a nice LG fridge, but went for the 5yr warranty as well. I'm sure it will die after 6-7 years. I also heard good things about the washer and dryers so got those as well, the washer had issues from the factory. Bad solenoid and computer. Then the stupid factory sent the wrong part, still waiting to use my brand new washer after two weeks. I hope that once they get it working it's good for a long time.

I went with an LG fridge because I looked at the warranties offered by the manufacturer's and LG was the best for other ones I was looking at. I bought at Home Depot and bought the extended warranty through Home Depot. Some specific parts are warrantied by LG past the Home Depot extended warranty. If the manufacturer is not willing to warranty longer than a year or two, who wants that. (Willing to stand by your product is what I am talking about). I am not naive though, all should stand by their product for at least 10 years minimum. (Refrigerators specifically.)

On a budget lol. They offered the laundy set for $1000 and fridge for $700. Fuck that not paying that much for a used Samsung set. I'll tell them I'll take all 3 for $900.

I'm pretty sure that all the well known USA brand names have been sold to Chinese companies a number of years ago. In any event the days of manufacturing them in the midwest are pretty much past us no matter what brand name is on the door. I doubt greatly you could today buy the same quality GE unit that you bought ten years ago.

All of my kitchen appliances at my new place are KitchenAid. They were bought when the house was built so about 6yrs old now. We just acquired them when we bought the house this year... haven't had any issues with most of them, but the stove knobs are breaking / were broken. It's a problem we have been easily able to get around otherwise.

I just replaced the water filter on the fridge so hopefully I get to at least go through that before the "7 year break" kicks in

Copper conducts heat better, so it would probably do better at thawing off that area. Did you use a long enough wire? Corrosion? No electricity is going through that wire.
