we have a subzero 690 48" from 1999 bought used. we have 1500 total into it including replacing the evap in the fridge side. probably have to do the freezer side in the next couple years which will be another 1k.. but it will last another 20 years.

Replaced an tiny old Kenmore side by side with a nice lg in our rental. no water or ice dispenser and a scratch and dent from Home depot for less than $800. also, it is the perfect size as most new stuff will not fit in the space. no issues.

My girlfriend had the exact same problem. So, I googled around and fixed it for her. In short, take off a rear panel, copper wire down the drain thingy, which extends it as a heat sink, voila issue fixed.

Here you go, video.

Got a mailing address so I can bill you?

Thanks, I will definitely give this a try. POS stupid design. But if it buys me 6 more months or a year it's worth it!!

Offered the seller $1000 for

Samsung RS257 fridge
Samsung #WF455AR and Dryer Model #DV455

She wanted $1700 for all three. We'll see what happens.

Well, I CAN NOT recommend Sumsung! Bought a $2500 french door fridge with lower freezer. Worked great for about 2.5 years before it started having problems. The little coil and drain is located in the back wall of the fridge. They cheaped out on the housing. It has rusted through and the rust has blocked the drain. And the coils are now icing up constantly. As the ice melts, water builds up in the bottom of fridge compartment which I have to clean out regularly....

I've called out repairmen twice. There is no good repair and the entire back panel housing is not available as a replacement part apparently..... So usually they repair guys just try to blow out the drain which works for a couple months before it starts all over.

So now, about once a week, I clean out standing water at the bottom of the fridge.

I've been eyeballing new refrigerators also and would love to know which is the most durable and reliable.

I was hoping LG might be better than Samsung. I have LG washer and dryer which I have been very happy with....

In the same boat with the Samsung fridge. Stopped working properly after a year. We don't use the ice maker since we don't have a water line near the fridge. Still, the ice maker makes knocking noises all the time. Also have the problem with freezing and leaking into the fridge. This happened about a year into owning the fridge. I'm in the market for a new one and might get the LG. We've had a good experience with the LG washer about two years in.

^^ Did you try contacting Samsung customer service about it? I love how Samsung allows you to schedule service from your customer portal. I did this with my dishwasher when the top rack had an issue and needed to be repaired. I had no issues with getting it scheduled and repaired plus they extended the warranty for free.

Sooooo they countered back with $1500. I'm thinking I max out at $1200. Should I worry since I don't think the warranty is transferable? Is there any way for me to get it extended?

It'll be covered under your home warranty for at least a year.

IMHO $1200 for the trio is pretty good since they're relatively new.

Copper conducts heat better, so it would probably do better at thawing off that area. Did you use a long enough wire? Corrosion? No electricity is going through that wire.
You want to use the same kind of metals or else you have an anode and cathode.

Insulation in fridges has gone a long way in 10 years. You'll break even on a new fridge jusy because of electricity cost savings.

I would have offered $500 and not negotiated. Id Rather just buy new.

I was just looking at washers and dryers. . You can get a pair for 700 new. . A nice fridge for $1k.

sub-zero stuff has not changed much, and we only pay for electricity in the winter when the days are short, otherwise our solar takes care of the rest. plus, it would take a heck of a long time to make up the 12k price difference between ours and a new one. There is no going back to a standard fridge when you have a 48in wide built in.

actually just checked the new vs old energy star labels. They are the same from ours to 2013 which is the newest one I found on a quick search. Ours still has the label on the front.

It looks like they're standing firm at $1500. I told them to come back to me when they're willing to come to $1300.

They have no receipts at all so basically no warranty besides the 1 year home warranty.

Their units are pretty nice but I think I'd actually just rather do a Home Depot 2 year no interest finance with 5 extended warranty for piece of mind.

7.3 Cubic foot is the sweet spot for efficiency. I bought a Sanyo at Costco a few years ago and it's great. Downsized from a double door behemoth..the energy savings was apparent in the first months bill. http://www.compactappliance.com/apartment-refrigerators/
I'm fairly certain you live alone, or don't cook to make 7 cf work all the time. I think I have more than 7 cf of beer/drinks in the fridge if we are having a party.

agreed. Especially if it says "Frigidare."

I'm also skeptical of the new fancy ones with all the gizmos attached. Just more stuff that breaks, and none of it related to the only job that the unit is supposed to do.
my Frigidare Gallery series has been going strong for 6 years now.

My Kenmore Coldspot (with top freezer) is still running great after 11 years.

Our Frigidaire is crap. Plastic parts always break, and are super expensive. I think they have a razor blade/razor model going. Plus door is not level, I had to prop the hinge up to get it to close properly.

turns out they simply replaced the entire computer in my parents fridge for no cost and all is well. this is an almost 10 year old Amana or Avaya, I can't exactly remember the name. Not sure if it was the store who provided the service or Amana/Avaya directly. I have no idea as I'm not there.

My folks had the same issue a couple months ago and they came out and replaced some part but it only lasted for 2 months. I think they were charged then. But they came back and made it right. That's some decent customer service. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I usually avoid spending $1.5+ on a fridge myself.

Even these days I'd rather spend a lot less on something that isn't well made and buy a new one along those lines.

If you have the money to blow go for it I guess.

The last Frigidaire we bought has been running about 18 years now, but the reliability rating has seemed to have dropped on them.

This one works fine.

It's not exactly a high build quality as far as the plastic on the interior, but it keeps running along.

As someone who just got a bottom freezer fridge, get one with doors instead of a drawer. The drawer is already proving to be awkward.

I've only owned one French door unit with the bottom drawer and the split doors on the fridge definitely made accessing things easier since its used the most. The bottom freezer section was a pita and the top drawer really doesn't hold anything except for flat times like pizza's or bacon. I kept a separate chest freezer for my bulkier items but that took up a lot of horizontal floor space. The French door units have grown in size since then are some are around 32 cu ft these days making it easier to store larger items but it still doesn't offer enough freezer space.
