Refrigerator will not stop making ice

So noticed yesterday that the ice maker on my GE fridge is not turning off. I tried pushing the lever that controls the ice maker all the way back to the off position as well as just turning the switch for the ice maker off, but its still running.

Been in the new house for about a year, so the appliance warranty might still apply. Any other ideas besides just having GE come to replace the ice maker?

as a previous owner of a GE fridge, this is a sign for you to start looking for a new fridge, its all downhill from this point

Sometimes you need to upgrade your fridge (or in this case, freezer) firmware.

I used to be a certified fridge repairman, so luckily for you I can share the easy steps.

1) Head to your local appliance store, any will do
2) They should sell specially programmed hams. These hams have RF chips that contain the latest firmware for your fridge
3) Put ham into the fridge and leave for 48 hours to sync the new firmware
4) The best part? The ham is totally safe to eat afterwards! Just pull out the microchips and it will be fine.

Be sure to read the change log that will come with your ham and ensure it's for your fridge's model number.

LOL, unplugged the fridge for about a minute and as soon as I plugged it back in, I heard the ice maker kick on. This thing is relentless

Are you sure the switch isn't frozen? The bar must contact a micro switch somewhere, although it might not be easily accessible.

EDIT: I see you turned the switch off too. I'd turn the fridge off for several minutes and see if that finally works.

My GE icemaker has a cable that plugs into the back of the freezer compartment. It is there so that it can be easily replaced. Unplug the cable and it should stop making ice.

As said earlier, most ice makers have a sensor / switch, which is activated when the ice bin is full. So either the switch / sensor went bad, the activator is stuck or the ice maker motor circuit is bad as another poster mentioned.

It's too cold. Normal refrigerator temperatures are above freezing. If yours is making ice it's broken. Even the marine moose knows this.

Remove cable from back of ice maker, there is a socket for it built into the refrigerator. Push up on bottom of the ice maker and it should come free. They usually hang on two or three screws on the side wall. Front cover of ice maker snaps off and inside is a gear and adjustment screw on the majority of them for the tension of the bar and how far it has to go to be on/off. Worse case there is a leaf switch stuck where it contacts the bar. Don't run it with water off, the defrost heater in the ice maker can cause damage to the rest of the parts in it if it is run for long periods of time like that.

Silly ruby.

his ice maker is whats making too much ice.

But the ruby is correct. A normal fridge runs at 1-4degreescelcius. If it ices up this could be an indicator that your fridge either has a mouse in it or is short of refrigerant

Or maybe, it has too much refrigerant. Then it would be cold with solution.

The only solution is to buy more scotch. A good single malt scotch with a couple of cubes of ice is heaven.
