I got a 60GXP on one of those incredible Dell deals a few years back and it lasted all of two weeks!! Dell was kind to me and sent a WD to replace it.

I just RMA'd 2 40 gig 60GXP's. If you're willing to wait, I'm sure they'll sell em to ya..

LMFAO Larry! Those drives would be perfect in a system like that!!!!!!! The "slow and funky" porn music will probably fry those drives in short order......

For you RMA guys, I still have a working 75GXP in my main rig that started making the clicking sound about two weeks ago. Can you PM me some info on the IBM RMA process, i.e. is it worth it? Thanks.

When my 13.5gb 22gxp died (power issue, it had to be shaken to start spinning), ibm sent me a replacement 15gb 75gxp - I sold it and as far as I know the drive is actually still working (I haven't asked about it in awhile though)

Ironically, I just received a hard drive today from Hitachi in replacement of my IBM 60GXP that I RMA'd. To my surprise they sent me a new Hitachi Deskstar manufactured in May 2004. Is this drive still prone to the inevitable clicking of the IBMs?

SCSI drives have a longer warranty than that. I had an Ultrastar 73LZX replaced under warranty recently; when I looked up the warranty info, I found that it had a 5-year (!) warranty on it.

I have 2 30gb 75GXP's in a RAID0 setup in my wifes computer...works fine actually. I did have 2 40gb IBM drives die on me, so no more IBM for me, but I do a dump of the 2 30's all the time on a 120gb WD external drive I got from CC for just under$80. Now that was a hot deal. 75gxp's weren't all bad, but I wouldn't touch a refurb or new one. And actually, the 2 IBM's don't make as much noise as the 2 Maxtor 120gb drives I have in mine.

just had a 20gig non-deathstar IBM die on me...
4+yrs of HTML, jsp and database work down the crapper. yeah yeah backup backup backup... I normally did but just redid all my PCs and didnt seup the backup process in time and all the old files were overwritten.

Im sending mine off to a data recovery joint.. they gave me initial price of $350-$2500 to recover.

I'll likely do it

I've got a 45GB 75GXP, probably the worst series for reliability. Mine was made in Thailand

it has had nearly 4 years of continuous use and rarely powered down (remember the IBM engineers saying their drives were only meant to be powered up for 8 hour work day?)

Amazingly it is still working great. No wierd noises. I just pulled it a couple weeks ago but I plan to put it back in service soon ...tho I don't trust it enough to store anything important. 75GXP's were thought to be one of the best drives back in the day; it is sad they mostly turned out to be defective.

ordered 5?! LOL, 5 x 40 = 200 bucks! 200gb..
are you building 5 pc? cause that all its good for but hell it maybe just temporary. dude you're nuts
btw,GEEK is charging too much and this is refurbish! 120gb cost 72 bucks, this does not make economic sense to buy 30 gb for 40 :\

I think he was joking...kinda going along with the pulse of the thread

they released a firmware update for the deathstars last year. I managed to revive a drive i thought was dead. It turned out that it just corrupted my keyboard to print (hard disks failed), and now it does this no matter what comp I plug that keyboard into.

I probably could have made a big enough deal to get it back but instead I just swore never to buy ibm or hitachi again.

They did that to me too...but I didn't have a scsi drive. Just a 15 gig 7200 rpm drive, 2 or so years ago.

I actually don't think its the IBM HDD's fault.

I had 2 75GXPs die on me but fortunately I was able to transfer the data to the replacement 60GXP they sent in return. When the 60GXP started going bad, I transferred it to a 120GB Maxtor which promptly died with all of my data on it.

I believe it must be some HDD virus that spread when you connect the IDE adapters to the drives.

BTW: I jest. IBM drives are the absolute worst. Though my story is true.

Yeah... it's called... uh... 'Windows'.

PS. Yeah, I had a Maxtor 60GB that I replaced my 75GXP with, and it died in only 6 months, whilst the 30GB 75GXP lasted 2 years. Figure that one out. Now I have an 80GB and 160GB WD JB drive, both running good for over a year. *knocks on wood*

PPS. Anyone know if any east-coast B&M stores will PM a Fry's ad? They have a 120GB Maxtor for $59 OTD this weekend, according to the threads here and here.
