Refurbished. Is an extended warranty available and how much? How well will this play DVD's with 8mb ATI Rage video? Can more video ram be added? Is there any possible way to upgrade this to 512 ram with a bios update? It only has 1 ram slot and says 256 max... This looks decent please help.

My sister bought one of these a few months ago from Best Buy. Two days later the battery failed to recharge properly and the scrolling device wouldn't work. It was a very sweet laptop otherwise (we returned it and got a Thinkpad). Nice price (we paid $1600 minus a $200 rebate).

On the other hand, a new one is only 250 dollars more at Fujitsu and they too have free shipping for a while. Maybe it isn't as good as I initially thought!

I think you are better off going with a name brand machine like Dell... Try their refurbished section... you get good deals sometimes.

There hasn't been any laptop deals that were even warm since the 20% off coupon at OD expired. This is warm, but we need a scorching deal to come along! Well at least I do.

Actually I just got a refurbed Dell earlier this week:

Inspiron 8100: 1 GHZ P3-M, 256 RAM, 30 gig HDD, 8x DVD, 32mb GF2GO, 15" UXGA, 10/100 etc
After shipping and all it came to about $1430.

This Fujitsu is a great price, but the question is, how is the warranty and return policy?

My Dell has 14 day satisfaction and 90 day warranty. If something is going to be wrong with the PC, it will happen right away (cept maybe HDD or battery).

From outpost.com

Special Return Policy for Reconditioned / Refurbished Products

Reconditioned / refurbished products are sold "AS IS" and are a final sale. These products have been previously sold and returned, reconditioned by an Authorized Service Dealer and repackaged for selling purposes. Outpost.com cannot guarantee that these products come with all the original accessories and software.

Outpost.com is a shady vendor... I bought a brand new motherboard which doesn't work no matter what I try, now they tell they don't accept returns on motherboards. That's fuc|<ed up! They used to be one of the best w/ their next day free shipping and great customer service. Now they just blow. Maybe because they have different management now.

I think this is a great bargain for a giga lappy. Too bad their return policy sux.

I personally bought a Fujitsu C Series Refurb from the Fujitsu website a few months ago.

My thoughts:

1) It is just as good as a new laptop, visually and mechanically (only 1 dead pixel on far right side of screen, my friend bought a NEW Sony VAIO, and it had 2 close to the center of the screen, and that was within "spec", in other words, they would not swap it out)

2) The DVD/CD-RW is one of the best available. . .it burns CD's at 8x whereas most other mfg's burn at 4x

3) Check the Fujitsu XP Upgrade Page b/c I upgraded my Win ME, to XP for $10! (Even a refurb model)**EDIT** Confirmed that this model C-6631 is on the upgrade list

4) Yes, the 8MB of video is sufficient for DVD playback, however, I do not play games on mine

5) The screen is bright and clear, but 1024x768 is not as good as the Dell SXGA or UXGA models

6) I get approx. 3.5hrs of battery life using my 802.11b wireless LAN connection to the cable modem

7) Mine is 800Mhz P3 w/ 256MB RAM and captures DV via FireWire input w/o dropped frames

8) I paid $1049 from Fujitsu, plus tax and shipping

9) If I needed a laptop, I would go to Outpost and buy this Fujitsu. . .trust me, you can't beat this deal for $1000

I got a refurb from them (fujitsu) about a month ago. It looks brand new and work very well...so far. The first thing I did is reformated and installed win2k and leave it on all the time running OGR, so the hardware is good. BTW, I think fujitsu calls it refurb because they want to reduce the return rate and limite the warranty (90 days). If you do a search on laptop, you will see there are thread about the dell deals and fujitsu deals about month ago. I try to cancel my order after I placed it but couldn't because my build order already went through (want the dell ). Pretty happy but it is kind heavy (7.9 lb).

Well isn't it better to buy from the fijitsu homepage?

for $260 more, you get a 256mb ram, and it's brand new, and don't have to worry about outpost return policy. isn't that better?

curious

Yeah I think it's a hot deal. Fujitsu were selling these for 1150 dollars (tax and S/H) a couple of weeks ago, but I decided to buy the DELL one. I am not sure if fujitsu is good or not. But I really liked my DELL which I sold later. If this laptop had a good Video Card. I would jump on it. But I think the Video Card is just too crappy.

This is a hot deal!!!!

I work with a company that ordered 3 of these... One of which is now mine Of the three we ordered 2 of them had all the original stickers on them, which makes me believe only one of them had actually been opened by a customer.

The vid card is fine for DVD playback and such... it is not for gamers though... one of the guys in the office tried to load Descent bad bad bad

The burner comes with Roxio EZCD 4, it works so I haven't put my Roxio EZCD Platinum 5 on here yet, prob won't as the RW is mainly for backing up critical data from HD. The CD copier copies to HD then to blank media. I copied one music (Meatloaf: Bat Out of Hell) and one data (Age of Empires) cd with no problems.

This is a heavy beast, but i think it is worth it as it has a slew of ports. S-Video, Firewire, 2 PCMCIA, Floppy, Headphone, Microphone, Digital Optical Out (for those of us with MiniDisc recorders), 8x DVD/CDRW Combodrive, Parallel, 10/100 Lan, 56K Modem, 4 USB and ext. monitor.

The CD player can be used with the lid closed using the front mounted controls... I think this a silly use for a $1000 Laptop but the boss loves this feature.

Specs from the Fujitsu Website.

One caveat the power supply on one the units was DOA but the Fujitsu tech support was friendly and fast to correct this. I called on Tuesday night after 8 PM had the replacement Thursday afternoon. The DOA unit was shipped back to them in the box they sent the replacement in... with the FED EX account number they supplied.

All in all I like the units and the tech support folks. Any questions i can answer I will.

Hank

Edit link without session id error to Fujitsu Outlet Page this is bookmarked and I check this at least once a week. Fujitsu charges both tax and shipping so the Outpost deal is very hot.

I also called the Fujitsu Tech and they confirmed that FUJITSU not Outpost handle all warranty situations, but all sales are final.

My wife is currently on her third Fujitsu Lifebook laptop of the last foru years, a 690tx, and since it is a bit long in the tooth I am watching for any deal that might come along to get the fourth. Her first Lifebook followed an IBM Thinkpad, which she had been very happy with, but we have never looked back.

Need I say more?

this notebook and the Dell Inspiron 4100 were both available as 'hotdeal' about 1 months ago and I thought long and hard about it. And then I went with Dell, cuz I want to play a little games, and with tax and shipping the Fujitsu was a little more than Dell. Anyone who said Fujitsu is not a namebrand is just...whateva....
This is a hot deal...definitely. but don't think it's available anymore...

Dell is a just PC builder using various outsourced components.
Fujitsu is a not a computer builder but have their own advanced researh department like IBM, HP, Xerox and etc, e.g. the Sun's UltraSparc processors were from Fujitsu. Dell definitely can't be compared with Fujitsu in terms of brand and technology.

Definitely hot but too late when I found this deal, though outpost still has it as a borken link. I'm now looking at the 7631 model but it costs $1500 everywhere.
