How much discoloration constitutes a "B" grade? Got my grade "A" last week and there's slight discoloration. you can definitely see what was probably an inventory tag right next to the Hitachi logo on the bottom left. I also have to have the contrast and brightness turned all the way up to 100. Is this normal?

Often we use FedEx Ground, but if your tracking number isn't working there, than it is Airborne Express
(We usually ship about half and half between fedex and airborne.)

I agree, excellent picture. Got mine today. But I am also concerned about the high brightness and contrast needed, I'm 96 and 97. I wonder how long this nice monitor is going to last?

Got this reply from Scott Moat.....

"A slight ammount of yellowing on the case is pretty standard for a
refurbished monitor, even a Grade "A". Somewhere along the line during
this deal it was mentioned that: "many of these Grade "A" monitors could
pass for new." However, that is the exception, rather than the rule.
Many people have been pleasantly surprised with how perfect their
monitors look, but most, like you have a monitor that looks at least a little
bit used. (buying used/refurbished is always a bit of a gamble) Any
more severe yellowing bumps the monitors down to grade "B". As to the
Contrast and Brightness settings, most of these monitors have come in from
the previous users with both of these settings almost all the way up.
It would seem that these particular monitors look best with higher
settings, but I wouldn't be concerned that this is any type of quality
problem.

With any refurbished purchase expectations need to be set slightly
lower than for a brand new product. It sounds like the monitor you
received is pretty similar to those that hundreds of other customers received,
but if you genuinely feel that this monitor does not meet grade "A"
quality, I encourage you to contact me again.

Thanks for doing business with us at AllThingsTech.com,
Scott Moat
President"

Good enough for me!

This is more of a technical question hoping someone can help answer, I don't have a driver for this monitor (says it doesn't need one) was just plug and play in a sense,,, I am running windows 2000 pro, with a ati all in wonder 8500DV video card.

My issue (not even a problem more of a question) is when I start my pc up and turn on the monitor for a split second it says something to the effect of invalid refresh rate (cant remember exact term) and occasionally some desktop items appear to "flicker" for a moment.

I don't want to damage the monitor, so should I find an actual Hitachi driver for it and would that possibly help the flicker or would it "set" a default refresh rate (I have never messed with refresh rates).

When I go into Display Properties, Settings, Advanced I can see the refresh rate is set at 75 Hertz at 800x600 (I like my 800x600 size so don't hassle me hehe) and that there are no drivers installed or needed (says no conflicts and that it is working fine).

Just lookin for some tech advice and or input, lastly I sorta see some very faint lines across my screen, I hit degauss yet they don't go away, its almost as if they are lines running around in a oval pattern going offscreen on each side, yet in the center they BOW up or down moreso.

I know this sounds like I am ragging on this Monitor, I am not, the faint lines aren't an issue really, just curious if i can correct or eliminate them, and also curious about drivers or that message I am getting (probably just a user error on my part)....

Any suggestions appreciated, I really like having this big monitor over my old 15 incher, just wanna make sure I do what is right for it and make it last.

I got 2 of these and they were both cracked... one in the back and the other in the front.
They were very nice about accepting the return for the one cracked in the front.
I kept the one that was cracked in the back.
They gave me full credit for the one that I returned and $30 off the one that I kept....
They offered to send me another one, but a Class B monitor, but I didnt' want it, besides I didn't want to take another chance on getting another cracked monitor.
I don't think it was shipped cracked, I think my local FedEx guys just are smoking the reefer and just don't care....hehe

Just a note, I called them when their website said that it was out of stock. They informed me that more were coming and to place the order and I would just have to wait a few days, but were in line to get one. So, even if the website states that it is out of stock, it may be worth it to give them a call.
YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT THE ANSWER IS UNLESS YOU ASK!!!

I think I answered some of my questions just by digging around hitachi's site, i downloaded their drivers for the CM811 and also upped my refresh rate to 85 as their page states

http://compare.hitachidisplays.com/hitachidisplays/datasheet.jsp?type=in&id=64

The faint lines are gone altho I haven't shut down and restarted to see if I am getting that same message anymore, but hopefully with the driver installed and the refresh rate at 85 per the page description upon restarting I shouldn't get that message next time (I hope).

I got my grade A monitor last week:

AWESOME deal!!

It's in perfect condition - no discoloration at all. It was shipped very well, too. It was wrapped in three layers of 'big' bubble wrap, and styrofoam packing peanuts around the outside of that. The box weighed in at 68 lbs.

The contrast/brightness came at 100/95 on my monitor. I think this monitor just runs high, but you can always increase your gamma in a couple years if the tube starts dying (at the cost of lower picture quality)

The picture is SOOOO nice. I've been running at 1280x1024, 85Hz (I think it can do 90Hz, but my vid card won't let me try). I decided to bring it to work, since I don't use my computer at home that much anyway (lol... I'm a systems admin & I've been working 60 hour weeks for the last few months. I'm a bit burned out on computers). Anyway, I spent 8 hours on Friday in front of Dreamweaver MX & I didn't have a headache, or the slightest bit of eye strain like I did on my previous monitor (Gateway2000 EV700) . In fact, my eyes felt incredible relaxed & rested as I was walking out to my truck on Friday evening - usually they are sore in the evenings from all the l-users who like to run their 19" monitors at 800x600 60Hz. (ps, whoever that was who's running at 800x600.... seriously dude.... try a higher resolution. At least 1024x768. I guarantee if you you give it a chance, you'll like it)

Great deal AT! I might buy another...

hmm I got my monitor today... it arrived in good condition, the monitor itself have a few slight marks on it. I don't know how it survived the shipping, the cardboard box looks like it have been kicked around a few good times.

The monitor looks great!! The picture quality is nice...etc...

However I do have a question... even at 85 hz at 1280*1024 my monitor screen shakes pretty bad, any ideas on how to fix it?

the only resoluation it doesn't shake is at 100hz @ 1024*768.

One other note...

I talked to the boss today more about the refurb monitors, apparently he might be able to get some 21" flat screen CRT monitors in the future too... No word on what grade or price they will be, (he seemed to think they'd cost a bit more than the hitachi's) Plus, even if we get some, we probably won't be able to get anywhere near the quantities we are getting on the hitachi's (like less than ten probably)
but still, for a few of you die-hard "true-flat" guys, we might have some good news on the horizon.

I'll keep you updated.

Hi Zhou, is your screen shaking or flickering?
Shaking is usually caused by power line interference, most often a transformer (like a speaker transformer) on the same circuit as the the monitor.
Try unplugging any transformers near the monitor.

slight flickering on the right side of the screen.

It is still ok... but gets a bit annoying.

well this will be my first time taking advantage of a deal posted in this forum. I'm hoping that I get a monitor as good as most of you recieved. I have a 21" monitor at work and quite frankly the 15" I'm using at home just doesn't cut it.

Same here. The bargains posted here usually are around 2+ days old after the deal starts, so very hard to get in on the deals ( damn shop-a-holics :disgust: ). I backordered my Grade A just before they raised the price so I got it for $10 less @ $169 . Hopefully, I'll get a nice one considering only 2/10 of the people seem to be getting what I consider unsatisfactory products. I have never bought a refurb product online or at the store before, so buying a refurb monitor is a huge step for me. Considerable risk too. If not for the generally great feedbacks from everyone that has ordered these I would not have even considered buying it. But hey, if you want to have big gains you'll need to take big risks right? Anyway, I'm taking a bite on this deal, hopefully I won't end up with ~$184 (damn taxes) worth of paperweight.

gt1562b and AbusedFish,

I believe that both of your monitors should be on their way out to you, so I guess we will know in a few days how well your first deal here at Anandtech went. (I too, quite often have a tough time getting in on the deals before they are sold out, but I think that's because I don't usually stay up till all hours of the night huntung for deals)

AbusedFish, you said yours was backordered, so that means you'll be one of the last people getting all of those fun packing peanuts

gt1562b, yours might be one of the monitors shipped with the new packing system, I will be anxious to see how well that works (and if it is worth the extra cost to us)

I expect to see lots more new activity on the forum here in the next few days as the people from this most recent batch start to receive their monitors.

slight flickering on the right side of the screen.
I've seen this caused by magnetic or electrical interference. Make sure there is no other monitors, speakers, fans, etc. right next to your monitor.

Oh good, I feel special already :frown:. I think I ordered it on the 8th (4/8). It took 1-2 days for the order to go through while it was still pending, so it did not ship until around 4/10 via Airborne Express. Waiting patiently .
