Yeah I was about to ask the same question. Can you plug in a 500Gig USB drive and play all your AVI/Divix/XVID files on it? That's pretty cool if does this...

That the unit can play DivX with an .AVI extension and Xvid files off a USB 2.0 thumb drive is confirmed. DIVX AVI files can play upconverted as well as DVDs.

Will not work with U3 (Sandisk), so get rid of that.

Will likely not play VOBs without stuttering as those are usually too large, so just convert the files to DivX.

Likely the USB port won't power up your HDD, but if you use a self-powered, FAT32 formatted HDD with one partition it will work fine. Will also work with all kinds of other storage so long as the USB power draw is not too great.

And the player is easily made region-free:

To Make this Player Region Free:
(The tray MUST be open in order for the Preferences menu to show up on Setup)
1. Hold the Stop key on the remote to open the DVD tray
2. press Setup
3. select Preference
4. Press 1,3,8,9,3,1
5. Press up/down key to select "0"

Great info! Now, are there any drawbacks to making it region free? I heard at one time that some discs won't play on region free players - was that an urban legend? Also, any side benefits? Heck, don't even know why I want to know because I only own region 1 discs.

LCD/DLP/Plasma sets already upconvert so unless you have a high end DVD player chances are your TV is going to have a better scaler.

You are right about that, but in practice there might actually be some benefit to using the scaler at the player level.

For example, I do notice a sharper image by feeding my 720P Philips LCD a 1080i signal from this DVD player. Feeding a 480p or 720p signal does not achieve the same result. The effect is subtle but noticeable.

You would have to deconstruct the signal path with each component mix to figure out if there is an advantage, but it just could be that in my particular case the solution the player/TV combination uses is a bit better than the TV alone.

I am upgrading to a high end LNT5271p Samsung LCD next week as well as picking up another of these refurb DVD players, so I'll get a chance to play around and see if there is any real difference with that configuration. My guess is that it will be minimal.

There are a lot of good reasons to buy into this bargain. Good audio DACs, region free, easy DivX playing swayed me. That it has good upconversion if you need it or believe in it will be a benefit to some.

In response to the question about region free somehow breaking your ability to play region 1 discs - I have never had any problem at all with any NTSC format discs from any region. Of course, you can just as easily switch the player back to Region 1 only if you do experience a problem. If you buy or rent movies from outside the US this is a super benefit.

Others have commented that they are able to play PAL discs on US NTSC TVs with no problem. Maybe even SECAM discs will work, anyone ever try this?

I don't know that I would claim this is a "universal" DVD player, but it certainly comes close at a small fraction of the price players with that label cost.

According to the reviews at newegg you can do just that.
Thats one of the main reasons for me to buy it.

Its also divx ultra certified , not just regular divx.
Meaning you can make dvd's with chapters, menus in divx format.

I just got mine today. Came very well packaged, and shipped in 2 days but it came from the same state I live in. Already tried it out playing some HDTV show from a usb drive and I have a USB external HD enclosure coming soon to hook up to it. I did notice that at parts the video would slow down playing off the usb drive, not sure if its the speed of the memory or how the file was encoded.

Does the DVP5982 have the same issue playing "Packed bitstream" XViD files like it's sibling, the DVP5960 (same features, except for 1080i instead of 1080p)?

With the DVP5960, you get jerky playback with certain XViD files, but apparently there is modified firmware to fix it and properly support "packed bitstream."

My reason for getting a cheap, upconverting DVD player is not for the upconverting, but for the HDMI connection. Lets me replace the 5 cables I was using before (3 for component, 2 for audio) with just one HDMI cable. Less clutter, and an all-digital signal direct to the TV. I set the output at 480p and let my HDTV do the upconverting to 1080p.

Just got mine today.
I tried playing some movies off a crucial 2GB memory stick and its working perfectly.
I set the output for 720p and the hitachi 51" I have does the rest.
Looks great, even with some of the more poorly encoded xvid.

Mine has been working fine.
I've watched about 10 movies now via memory stick and the usb port.
Also working fine with dvd+R disc.

Only thing I hate is the menu when your playing divx.
It limits the filename to 8 characters.
So I had a couple episodes of prison break and had to go back to the pc and rename them because I couldn't tell what video came first.
If you use divx ultra, its not a problem.
