I agree. It's a great player.

I plug in a mini USB hard drive and stream Divx and Xvid with no issues.

Agreed with the those agreeing.

I have a step down from this one, my in-laws have this one. Great with AVI files and DVDs as well. I'd nab this one if I wasn't going the HTPC route later this year.

Which external drive enclosures are you using with the player ?
I need to pick up another one and don't want to get one that won't work with it.

I purchased this unit new from Amazon about 1.5 months ago to replace another Philips Divx player I had.. this one is awesome.
Everything looks fantastic on my 42" Aquos with the upcoversion.

Great player. Got mine from BestBuy for $60 on sale last month. Does a much better job playing DiVX than previous stand-alone player. Haven't tried the USB port yet. I did have it mysteriously turn off one time though. Three minor complaints.

1) The unit is so lightweight that pushing the power or eject button will often make the player slide back.

2) Unit takes several seconds to power up. That's kind of okay, but wish there was an indicator LED or something because I don't know if it registered the remote's command for several seconds, until the display lights up (or doesn't).

3) Speaking of remote, it seems kind of weak. It has to be pointed directly at the unit or it won't register. I'm now using a universal remote which isn't as picky.

I have to agree with a couple of your complaints.
I'm not sure if it has rubber feet but if it does it can be a lot better so it stops sliding around.
The remote is garbage, but can't really expect much from a $60 dollar player with HDMI and 1080P upconversion.

The power up speed is fine with me.. it's super fast compared to the Toshiba HD DVD player.

I'd be all over it like white-on-rice except no SVideo out. Yes, I know, I'm stuck in the 20th century, but I am not yet ready to replace my 52 inch TV and home theater receiver and two DirecTivo units.

I don't have an external HD, so I just load up Divx/xvid files onto my ipod and stream them over through that with no problems whatsoever.

It's not the time to power up, it's that there's no indication it has powered up for a couple seconds.

This is a very good player. It can play everything, even cardboard .
It's so nice that it can play ISO & avi files from external HDD.
The DVD tray is very flimsy. The remote is crappy and so slow.
It's cheap and really look cheap.

Highly recommended if you want a cheap DVD Player.

:thumbsup:I've had this player for about six months and I agree with the above comments that it is a great, inexpensive upconverting standard DVD player with the benefit of a useful USB port.

It does seem unresponsive at startup and the remote sometimes takes a couple of button pushes to trigger an action. A friend suggested that his remote was significantly more responsive with fresh batteries but seemed to lose effect with battery fade. Maybe the infrared signal is relatively weak. Notwithstanding these quirks, this is a really good deal for a fine player with lots of features.

If you have an HDTV of any kind you might also consider if one of the now obsolete HD-DVD players selling in some places for $50 - $75 might be a better option in that you can still get 6-7 HD-DVD movies with that purchase. They also upconvert standard DVDs and are also generally have pretty good feature sets. I think whatever HD-DVD movies are out there will be sold at the same price as regular DVDs so even if the format will not have new titles coming out you still have access to the library that has been published so far.

That's a good point. So, are there any HD DVD players that have a USB port and can play DiVX? Wait, don't tell me or else I'll be tempted.

How is this similar to the Philips?

I meant that I think it may be similar to the Sony DVP-NS57p which I mentioned above.
You can research Amazon reviews.

I still fail to see how either of the two Sonys is similar to the Philips and/or is relevant. I don't mean to bust your chops as a newbie (although with a 4-year tenure here).

Depends. If you just want a cheap all-in-one system, then it's okay for a smaller room. If you want a system to grow with/into, then don't get it. These systems use proprietary cables and connections, so you can't use the speakers with a normal receiver, nor better speakers with this unit. Also, inputs are likely very limited.

Looks real sweet but I see no DTS, can anyone confirm if it does DTS?

The spec sheet does not show DTS. Many receivers have both Dolby and DTS decoding built in, so in most cases you would not need separate decoding at the player level.

There are two other real advantages to this player that have not been mentioned -

1. The upconversion can go all the way up to 1080p resolution.

Even the HD-DVD players that I mentioned as an alternative choice only upconvert up to 1080i, and you just lost the benefit of getting the five free HD-DVDs as that offer expired yesterday.

I won't go into the argument on the utility of upconverting by way of the display or the player here. But, if you buy into the idea of upconverting at the player level and you have a 1080p HDTV and a collection of standard definition DVDs, this player is a super option.

2. The player utilizes 192kHz/24 bit audio DACs. This is a very high quality spec for playing your regular audio CDs. You get an audiophile playback unit for CDs with quality DVD and DIVX playback thrown in for free!
