Refurb ReplayTV $329 WITH LIFETIME

ReplayTV is clearing out refurbished 5040's for $329 including a lifetime activation. The lifetime activation goes for $250 and is going up to $300 next month, which makes this a great deal. Once you've had a Replay or a tivo you'll never go back to watching live TV. There's tax for california residents (maybe others), and shipping is a reasonable $12.

This is a nice deal, about $40 cheaper than any previous 5040 deal when you factor in the activation.

Pre-emptive answers

1) ReplayTV (RTV) is not going out of business. SonicBlue, the company that owned RTV went under. RTV has been bought by Denon & Marantz who have the money to back up the RTV and keep it going.

2) There is no way to get around the $250 activation - live with it.

3) It works with pretty much any cable box, any satetlite receiver or regular cable.

4) Activation is going up to $300 or $12.95/month I belive June 1st.

5) There is a $50 MIR on new 5040's but you will not be able to get this, they are keeping track of the serial #'s of the refurb units they sell.

I have a Showstopper 2000 which I can sell on eBay for about $300.. time for an upgrade!!

I have a showstopper 3030 right now with an 100GB drive in it.

questions:
1) what new features are in the 5000 series?
2) I'm going to sell my 3030 on ebay then, how much to ask for it? Shoudl I just leave in the 100Gb drive or put back the stock 30GB and use the 100GB on the 5000 series?

Is the lifetime for only the box purchased or is it transferrable to a new box if these refurbs poot out?
I gonna wait til get a few details about this service. Read their FAQS but they they didnt cover my concern.

Lifetime of their programming not a lifetime warrenty.

Good deal. I recently got new 5040 and I love it.
ROSALIEPIZZA, yes it can be tranfered to another unit for fee of 50.00. Read the FAQs I think, I read it there.

It is garanteed there are no working coupons with SB right now, they used to give coupons for the preoders of new products - 100$ off , or free install, or free shipping and such, those are long gone. Rebates are also not valid on this unit, but the deal is great, I could not pass it up.

1) commercial advance, broadband hookup, send/receive shows over internet, extract shows with dvarchive (not officially supported), ability to record first-run only, better space management
2) make a good ad & you'll get around $350

Well, their web store doesn't refer to it as SOLD OUT as the other ReplayTV boxes they've had on clearance, but the e-mail confirmation lists it as (Backordered). Last time this happened (albeit Staples and the backordered status happened when they could no longer locate the instock clearance item when it was time to send the delivery) I got a SOL e-mail message from Customer Service.
Well, hopefully they'll be quick to confirm/deny availability because the other option is Cosco before the end of the month and the subscription goes up to TiVoland rates. (But then you have to deal with Rebates...)

No you will not be able to. The SS uses an older version of the RTV software and so you cannot just put the old HD in - you have to format it using RTVPatch first. You may be able to extract the shows to your PC however.

I just sold my SS about 2 weeks ago and got the 5040. Mine was one of the first SS's out there, and I didn't want to chance something going wrong after this long, so I let it go on eBay. Now it's someone else's problem

For anyone thinking about this, some more info:

As far as networking goes, you can either connect to your network via regular ethernet cables, but if you want to connect to a wirelss network, you must either use a wireless bridge or a wireless access point connected to the network jack. The USB port is not supported yet, so you cannot use a regular USB wireless adapter.

The only downfall with using wireless is that the bandwidth will not lend itself to streaming files to other RTVs or DVArchive. I ended up just running another network cable to my 5040.

This deal is very good, especially with the fees going up in a few days. The more 5000 series owners, the better. More people to share shows with

I was able to connect around 11:00pst this morning, but I was reluctant to purchase before I did some research on upgradability of the unit... around 12:00 or so I noticed that the site was getting hammered.
