I cannot believe that I am contemplating this deal. Let me give you an inventory of my current PVR inventory:

2 x UltimateTVs
2 x DirecTivos
4 x DishPlayers
1 x Replay 3030

You can say that I am addicted to PVRs. One thing to note about PVR's is that I can sell each one of the PVRs above for a nice profit. As we all know, this is a rare trait for tech items. This is a good deal, you will not loose money.

I've read that if it's still within ReplayTV's warranty period, the lifetime subscription will be transferred to your replacement unit. Outside of that, as MontyBurns stated, you're SOL.

Then what is the big deal about going to a lifetime sub if (when) the bloody thing dies and\or is out dated if you cant transfer the sub to a new unit?

As I asked above, is it better to buy a RTV from Amazon\BB, take the rebates and go the current $10\mth route vs this refurb or similar deal with the lifetime "til until you trade up or unit dies" deal? Be nice...I'm just asking.

I think people didn't understand your original question. It seemed like you were asking if this unit should be purchased with lifetime or with monthly payments.

So from Amazon after 2 $50 rebates you'd be looking at something like $185 for a unit without the lifetime subscription? While the refurbs with lifetime are $329

$329-$185 = $144

$144 will buy you about 14 months of service.

If you think the replay will still be working in Sept 2004, then the lifetime service was a better choice. If you think the replay will break in the next year+, then the month to month would have saved you some money.

I'm betting on the fact that the "refurb" replay will work for more than a year.

My order status changed to "Processing" today. And I used the coupon. So there is hope.

Very true, Didn't pick up on that as I am more of a Replay man myself.

Monthly & liftetime fees are going up on June 1st:

http://www.sonicblue.com/video/replaytv5000/pricing_update.asp

So $144 will only be getting you a little over 11 months of service.

And for a refernce I have had 3 of the 3k era replays working continuously for nearly 3 years. The only major problem was when one of the drives died cause my AC went out and my old apartment hit 95 degrees.

This is assuming that you get the rebates. The chances of you not getting rebates is far greater than ReplayTV disappearing.

Currently, there is only ONE $50 rebate offer on RTV's, not two (unless you can prove otherwise). So the Amazon price is about 235 plus fees.

So, 329.99 - 234.99 = 95 (which is more like 9 months @ 10/month), and in two days, that will be even less mileage.

Status:Backordered->processing->cancelled:|Glad I've already got a hacked ShowstopperAfter all of this delay when the Showstopper goes bad I'll definitely be looking at Tivo.

So much for Denon "helping" replay.

Is it true that only Tivo (w/ dual tunners) allows watching one channel while recording another? I've heard this before, but wasn't clearly stated it the recent faq's I've skimmed.

Edit:

Yap, just cancelled my order, and I'm not disappointed.

Deal is dead, i.e. cancelled! And there is no response from the CS people, even if you can get through!

Don't be too upset about your cancelled orders. I had a replayTV from BestBuy and the thing was terrible. Tech support sucked and it took literally 10 seconds to switch a channel. I returned it for a tivo 60hr. Tivo still has some channel switching delay but not nearly as bad as ReplayTV.

i've got a replay 3030 and absolutely love it. Sure there is a channel switching delay, but I never watch live TV anyways -- that was the whole point of buying this thing.

Considering I own 4 replayTVs already I am more than happy with them. Also the channel switching delay has been improved with the latest version of the software.

ALL PVRs have a channel changing delay, get used to it. If you were a channel surfer, PVRs will quickly make you a guide user. Since the ReplayTV is SA and my Tivo is a DirecTivo, I cannot accurately compare the channel changing times, but they are both slow. The SA has the IR blaster issues and that slows things down.

Can ReplayTV manually record/play without the subscription? What about setting a specific time for recording?

Thanks,

Yes, but it's a pain. Without the guide, it's basically a brick. With the guide it's GREAT. Love my ShowStopper! Once you get one you never go back.

Users are reporting on the avsforums that if your order says cancelled but you haven't received a cancel email, the order will still go through. A CSR is claiming there is some kind of server error.

We shall see.

Please explain how to use the Family and Friends. I've gone to both f*twallet and t*chbargains and can't find the procedures.

Thanks,

My order is now back to saying "Processing"!

Woohoo! Of course now I really gotta get serious about unloading my showstoppers.... 5 ReplayTVs is just a few too many to justify to the wife.
