Question:

If I'm going to be installing another hard drive in this thing, should I wait to activate it with the new harddrive? Or does that not matter?

Doesn't matter. You best bet is to setup with the current harddrive and wait till the warranty expires (30 days on the refurbs) just to ensure that nothing is wrong with the unit.

Arrived today--order#422xxx.Ordered 5-25-03.It appears new--at least all the accessories are in their original and unopened bags. The unit itself is perfect cosmetically. The only thing that makes me think it might be a refurb is that there was a rubberband on the powercord. I'm installing it now so I'll report back any problems.Sure wish the wireless USB worked but hopefully before long. Looks like my kid will have to sacrifice his WET-11 from his PS2.
Actually I'll probably use the phone line until they get the wireless usb figured out.

So far so good.

Has anyone had any success transferring their recordings to the PC using DVarchive and then burning to a DVD-R that is playable in a standard DVD player? I'm really looking forward to be able to do that. Anyone know of an online guide for using the 5040 for such a task?

Been discussed plenty of times on the AVSForums. Do a search over there:

Actually thier web site says ? 90 Day Limited Warranty

I'd wait 90 days before cracking it for a new drive.

New units come with 1 year parts/90 days labor

I got mine yesterday.

Has anyone gotten the S-Video out to work? I have S-Video going in and that works but the S-Video out produces a messed up picture on the screen. When I power the unit off, the TV is blank but when I power it on, I get some sort of blue screen but it's like not watchable like it's scrambled.

The manual said that for the outputs, all of them are active all the time so I don't think I need to enable S-Video. Anyone else have this problem?

Also, sometimes when I am watching something, the video pauses for a split second every 10 seconds or so like there's something running in the background that's taking up CPU usage. I experienced this when nothing else was going on (not copying anything or streaming anything.) I guess I'll try unplugging the ethernet the next time this happens to see if that's the problem. Anyone else experience this?

I believe you need to enable the s-video. Somebody on FW had the same problem but said they found their answer on AVS

I finally setup my refurb 5040 after receiving it end of last week. Everything seems to work fine and it is a tad louder than my SS 3030 since there is now a fan in this unit.

Commercial advance works really well on this thing! I really hope that I can get in on a cheap HD deal as I need to expand the recording time on this thing -- 40 hrs in standard quality is way too little

Got mine but I haven't set it up. Where can I get instructions to expand the recording time? Thanks,

Well, looks like I didn't need it. I kept debating on whether to get it or not, and now it isn't there anymore. Good luck to all those that got in before the price hike.

EDIT *SIGH* More gut wrenching tomorrow. Seems like it IS still there, in fact.

Alright, I just went back and scanned through about 35 pages of the 72-page thread on FWallet to try and find what I had originally read about s-video problems on there. And this is what I found.

Post by noman - From Page 55
Well mine's not DOA, but s-video in wasn't functioning. Everything else functioned properly. I'm not sure how many of you use s-video in, but you may want to check it out.
For the next ten pages, nobody responded to noman's problem, and then...

Just an update on my situation with the s-video in not working. No thanks to Sonic Blue Tech support, I figured out the problem using the AVS Forums. Stupid thing has to be turned on and in a not so obvious setup menu.
So in the end this may not be good news for you since noman was actually having problems with the SVideo in and you're having trouble with SVideo out.

There have been a variety of complaints on both FW and AVS about these refurbs having problems. I want mine to get here just so I can find out if it's even going to work or not. If it's busted, I'm not messing with this company again anytime soon. I'm sending it back, letting Amex know and just writing off the last THREE WEEKS that I've spent worrying about this product.

Got mine, set it up last night. After I realized my stupid mistake in connecting my cable box it works perfectly fine.

I already had a 5k series so I can't wait to start testing the streaming functions.

No one ever said the Replay is perfect. Even a couple minutes of investigative work on the web should have told you that lots of people have had quirks with these units. (The fact that the company has such a truckload of refurbs to sell is also a good clue.) I've had mine for awhile, and I love it. But if you're wanting something that is guaranteed never to break, you should have paid more for a new unit with a 1-year warranty.

Just saw this on SonicBlue's website:

The ReplayTV 5320, software support for wireless USB (802.11 b) Network Devices and software support for video sharing and streaming between ReplayTV 5000 and ReplayTV 4000/4500 are estimated to be available Q1 2003.
